You ever think about Gintoki's mental state post-canon? Like sure he got to give Shoyo a "proper" (if you can even call it that) goodbye this time, but in the end he still had to watch sensei die AGAIN. And both times it was him at the end; the first by cutting off Shoyo's head himself, and the second was Shoyo dissipating in his arms. And that was immediately AFTER he just watched his childhood friend die in his arms, after being forced to smile as his friend closed his eyes the final time. Sure, Gintoki says that he never loses anyone because they stay in his heart, but goddamn that's gotta be hard in the immediate aftermath.
