Why does one single verse become, according to Ar-Razi, the key that unlocks the entire meaning of Surah al-Baqarah? And what does it actually mean to live free from fear and free from grief?
DESCENDING TO THE EARTH: THE BEGINNING OF THE TEST
"Go down, all of you. Then when guidance comes to you from Me, whoever follows My guidance — there will be no fear concerning them, nor will they grieve." (Al-Baqarah, 38)
Imam ar-Razi says this single verse is the key to the entire meaning of Surah al-Baqarah. A human being has arrived on the earth. The earth is a place of testing. But Allah did not leave humanity alone in this test — He sent guidance: prophets, revealed books, a clear way forward.
"There Will Be No Fear, Nor Will They Grieve"
Imam ar-Razi examines this promise in careful detail. Whoever follows Allah's guidance is freed from two specific burdens.
Fear is anxiety about the future — the unknown that hasn't happened yet, the outcomes we cannot control. The believer does not carry this fear, because he knows the future rests entirely in Allah's hands. Whatever comes will come according to a wisdom greater than his own understanding.
Grief is sorrow over the past — regret for what has already occurred and can no longer be changed. The believer is not consumed by this grief, because he knows that everything that has happened to him unfolded by the will of Allah. Nothing was random, and nothing was wasted.
Ar-Razi's point here is striking: this isn't a promise that nothing difficult will ever happen. It's a promise that a believer can face both the unknown future and the unchangeable past without being crushed by either one — because both rest in the hands of the One who guides him.
