I love when I train Kovu for 45 minutes and it feels like 15 minutes. I think it's one of the only times when I am really and truly fully engaged; I feel so calm after, too. Kovu's not the only one who benefits from the mental stimulation
Just attended a really cool webinar on cognitive biases and I'm rethinking some deeply engrained dog training things. And I'm about to read some books on cognitive biases...
I really, really love the set up for TAFDT. Because actually attending a webinar for once was so fucking nice and I wish I'd been doing that for the past 6 months. I wish my mental health wasn't kicking my ass. But it's not like college, I haven't missed it, its not too late. I will be able to tune into one every week for the rest of my life if I want to.
Plus, even though completing the assignments and videos has been so frustrating and difficult, the feeling of satisfaction whenever I check one off the list is amazing. I'm learning so much. Theres enough pressure to encourage me to push myself, but my mental health isn't crumbling, I'm not struggling to keep up, god if I was given accommodations like this in college I might be in vet school right now.

I just watched a 62 minute lecture on the most effective way to add a verbal cue to a hand signal and STILL didn't get a good enough video of me doing so to submit it for feedback .-. so yeah lmao that's just what studying for your CTC is like
Honestly it's very hot and sexy that TAFDT breaks down information for you but also trains you to sort through information because it's a really important skill even if means that one day I need to unlearn what I'm learning. The field of evidence-based behavior modification is in its infancy and even the science itself is always evolving so I think it's so important to be able to think critically. I love that we're required to look through peer-reviewed sources but they're also broken down in webinars and modules so if it's difficult to read through there are other ways of thinking through the information. It's really refreshing because it's a nice balance between "training is about emotion and your personal opinion and the individual dog, There Are No Answers" and "there is only one way and this it and everything else is wrong". Because like.. there are things we know about behavior and there are things we don't. And then there are things that we don't know for sure, but have pretty decent evidence for. It's really important to understand those differences while synchronizing all that information and that is super difficult! It's a learned set of skills, one that's especially difficult for those who didn't have the privilege to get a higher education and even for those that did and got fucked by college being more about struggling to memorize information for tests and learning to think critically.
