Basically, in St. Lanier’s at least, Scratch/Laszlo, was Kinger/Grant’s best friend in college, who helped him to step out of his comfort zone and socialize more, even helping him meet Queenie/Mary. This was mostly due to how…generally wild, strange, and confident Laszlo was, which actually inhibited him in most other aspects of life. He got a job working IT at the same children’s hospital Grant was working at, largely because Grant was working there and was able to put in a good word for him—his impulsivity and strange ideas made him basically unhireable anywhere else. But, after a couple extremely boring years of working IT, he, like in canon, was found to have a tumor in his brain. He was able to keep working for a few months, but eventually both the tumor & the weight of chemotherapy started weighing on him too much to function on his own anymore, and, being alienated from his family and unable to pay for a home care nurse himself, asked Grant & Mary if he could stay with them. The two accepted, (Grant because he really was his best friend and Mary because, although she & Laszlo had some slight annoyance towards each other, she still cared about him) and the three of them together started working on the St. Lanier’s Hospital simulation, Grant & Mary hoping it would be a way to help sick kids and maybe be a place to ease Laszlo’s suffering as he died, and Laszlo hoping it would be a way to separate his mind from his body and effectively cheat death.
