It had settled into her bones, while she had stood watching them lower her mama into the earth — a truth baking into her genes, her being, akin to a name or the colour of her eyes. G had not cried, then. She simply watched, and when her mother disappeared under layers of dirt, she'd watched that, too, as if she could see past it and to the corpse laying now, rotting, underneath.

She'd wanted to die, then. But it hadn't been a thought popping into her head with clarity and precision. When she walked away, she didn't think she'd wanted to die — she thought she wanted to get a drink. When she leaves their family home, she hadn't thought she'd wanted to die — she just thought she needed a change of pace. When she spends nights alone, wandering town after town, through shady alleyways — she hadn't thought she wanted to die.

When Tabitha Scarlet sends her bus tickets to a funeral of woman her mother hated, G Scarlet hadn't thought she'd wanted to die then, either.

G's mother hated Scarlet Hollow. G had loved her mother. When she stands in Scarlet Hollow's main street, looking down the street, looking at the buildings, she tilts her head up to the sky — as if to ask, pleading for a sign, what had made her mother loathe this place so? To have let it impart such mark on her life, still, even when they had been miles and miles away?

G had looked up, because looking down meant she might've seen her mama, as it was when you roam old haunts — and sometimes, she wasn't quite sure she was ready for that.

She never ends up finding her mother in Scarlet Hollow. But she sees herself, in the other. Tabitha's barbed tongue makes something rise in G, and though it's not quite banter, not quite familiar enough to be banter and good-natured wit, still, G had indulged in it. Tabitha didn't need to know what G had thought of her, didn't need to know the way she looked at her, didn't need to know the quiet defense G raises of her name from time to time.

Her mother, after all, had hated Scarlet Hollow. And Tabitha was of it.

But her mother is dead. And so is Tabitha's.

So it is there, in that town, where G Scarlet realises she wants to die. She realises it in the pit of Oscar's house, the memories of a man who was not her, who was not even a Scarlet — who had simply been in love and been loved and been wronged, loved wrongfully and wrongfully loved — lingering in her mind. She realises as she stares up and sees nothing but dirt.

She realises she'd wanted to die when she had looked at Tabitha, had met her eyes, and in the unnatural light realises, in that same breath — she loves her.
