my friends, we are in the kitchen together and i am cooking for you. come sit on the island and be close to me without doing anything. i’m not letting you help, i want to do this, i want to do this for you. i want my hands to be busy and honest for you, i want to turn the care i have for you into something you can taste. i add a little less spice into the curry than usual because you can’t handle too much, i add a pinch of salt in your tea because it’s sweeter that way. when i dice the vegetables they are not uniform, but that’s okay; i’m not trying to impress you. i’m making you a meal because love needs a place to land: a plate, your heart. you can sit and tell me about your day, you can laugh, you can cry, you can watch me quietly. i will keep moving and i will keep tending, because i care about you. i feed you because i can’t stop myself from wanting you to be full. i feed you because food is love, and i love you, and in the kitchen, i get to prove that.
