You should have cultural context for alliances or enmity between nations. You should understand how indigenous/black/queer/disabled people or women/immigrants/etc. were treated in your country until recently, and are today, if you don't have firsthand experience.
A lot of weird, shocking and nonsensical aspects of society are elucidated by this context, and while it likely doesn't make it less horrifying or surprising you'll learn few things are unprecedented. You might even pick up some tips and tricks for affecting positive change and resisting regression.
Just for the love of god learn from reputable sources (libraries, librarians, museums and museum programs are a good starting point) and don't take anything you learn on tiktok/tumblr/etc. as fact without digging into it first.
