WITNESS THE SPRINGTAIL!
Collembologist, talking about globular springtails: Yeah, see this? this is Sminthurinus. This over here? Sminthurus. Back over here? Sminthurides. What do you surmise about these?
Student: They're related genera?
Collembologist: NO!
Collembologist: They're actually as different taxonomically as a globular springtail can get!
Student: Hwat the fuck

TODAY'S FACT IS
Did you know that Allacma Fusca is a species of springtail found in Western Europe and the British Isles? For springtails, these are fairly large, measuring up to 3.5mm long with a bulbous abdomen. These springtails can often be found in leaf litter or other moist organic material. They can survive in environments with up to 10% carbon dioxide for a few hours at a time but prefer a lower concentration.

Garden Springtail (Bourletiella hortensis)
Harms Woods - Glenview, IL - May 6th 2024
Talk about an absolute joy to see! I just happened to see this little guy through my camera while photographing the Millipede posted yesterday. I am familiar with the springtails used within bioactive enclosures as I keep them with my Isopods and in my Jumping spider enclosure but those look very different then this guy and other members of the Order Symphypleona (Gobular Springtails) do. They primarily feed on fungi and moss.

While I'm still somewhat active, hey guys I got a macro lens for Christmas, look at my critters boy
