Synopsis: A grieving man visits the reservation to bury his young wife and makes amends with her family. (TW: death, grief, alcohol abuse, sexual content, discrimination/violence towards Native/Indigenous Americans)

This reading is extremely emotional, you can even hear Robert get tearful at the end. Definitely a new favorite of mine!

So, this happened last night...

Patti LuPone: Songs from a Hat

I have been to three of these hat shows and I'm convinced the hat hates me. Every single one has had "Ladies Who Lunch" and "Meadowlark," and I'm sick of it. And to do that within the first few numbers? Yeah, I was tired at the start, but once we got past that and into some lesser-sung tunes, she reeled me in. I do think Patti's voice is strongest when she's in a full belt, or a low alto ballad. For some of the softer songs where she relies on her head voice, she gets shaky on the mix, which is to be expected for a performer in her mid-seventies. Her "As Long as He Needs Me" resonates as strongly as ever. And I can't complain about eight Sondheims, including "The Madame Song" and the riding crop. And okay, yes, she really does still showcase her grasp of "Everything's Coming Up Roses," and the other Gypsy numbers.

Patti is such a dynamic performer, and I do enjoy when she's just having her fun singing things she doesn't normally get to do when touring the country. I do think I enjoy this format at the more intimate 54 Below rather than the larger traditional space.
