Mike talking about how he felt before their first meeting: “I was so alone and scared. You were alone too.” Robin’s words that play after the first meeting flashback/during the scenes of young Mike and Will being happy together: “I just needed to stop being so goddamn scared.”
Their fear being linked to the queer fear of who you really are and feeling alone to it. However, being with one and other makes them feel less alone and less scared hence how could that ever be something to be afraid of?
The reason why those specific words play over Will and Mike being happy together is that why should Will be afraid and ashamed of his love for Mike? He makes him happy and he should embrace it.
