“Well, here we are Diavolo. The private room at Ristorante Six.” Lucifer said, feeling somewhat odd about the privacy. “I thought our bet was simply dinner, though I must admit that I am gratified by your desire for privacy, lest my brothers make a mess of our… time.”
Diavolo laughed, quieter than his usual boisterous energy. “I wished to have some time with you in private.” He shrugged. “I thought we could take the time to talk about some things without interruption.”
“Things like teasing me about my newest pact, I’m certain.” Lucifer grumbled.
“Well, true. How did Miss Nia manage to beat your scores?” Diavolo asked with a smirk.
“I think it has something to do with being distracted by a human in my home.”
“Fair that you were distracted, but I think she really just has a mind for law.”
“Why do you say that?” Lucifer asked, still sulking.
“She didn’t just beat your score. She wasn’t just the top of the class this term. She also beat my scores from when I took the course.”
“You have got to be kidding me.” Lucifer was stunned, and he didn’t like it one bit. Nia’s performance really reminded him of Lilith, and he felt himself tearing up.
“Don’t be upset, Lucifer. She’s talented, and we should be proud of her.”
“I am proud of her.” It was his sin, after all.
“Then…” Diavolo wasn’t even pretending not to pry.
“Lilith wanted to go into cross-realm law, before we fell.” Lucifer said finally, taking a deep breath. It would not do to actually cry in public. Even just tearing up in a private room was far too much emotion.
“I always wondered why you turned Demon. Just stripping you of your magic would have turned you human. That’s the typical errant-angel punishment.” Diavolo said, quietly, one hand reaching across the table into Lucifer’s peripheral vision, in case he wanted to hold it.
“It was part of our Covenants with Michael. The worst punishment he could imagine for turning against him. And just as easy to make fatal - I know he knows the spell to make Devildom air caustic, as well. Like breathing in poison, it was a punishment for traitors during the war.”
“And he used it on Lilith when she was injured, to ensure she didn’t simply become a demon and live happily ever after.”
“Yes.” Lucifer said. “I will never forgive him.”
“And yet, you still bound yourself to me to save her.”
Lucifer was silent for a long moment, his hand instinctively reaching out to take Diavolo's. How could he explain to Diavolo that he was willing to pact himself because he simply trusted Diavolo enough?
“I would like to reciprocate, Lucifer.” Diavolo said when he felt the silence stretched on too long. “Our relationship is such that I feel it unfairly imbalanced. Make a pact with me.”
Lucifer had gone from pensive, from trying not to think about Lilith’s death, to thinking too hard about how he felt about the Demon Lord in front of him.
“You must know what it means - what it used to mean - to share reciprocal covenants in the Celestial Realm.” Lucifer said, quietly. “It would be akin to being married in the Human Realm, Diavolo. Do you know what you’re offering me here?”
“I do.” Diavolo said, the choice of words deliberate and pointed. “It’s quite the same here, though done more freely than I must expect it was done in the Celestial Realm.”
“Not for the future Demon Lord.” Lucifer bit out the words.
“Do you disbelieve in my sincerity, Lucifer Morningstar?” Diavolo asked, his voice low and quiet.
“Of course not. It’s just not simple. You will require an heir which I cannot provide, and despite the Devildom being open to polygamy, I don’t see your advisors thinking—“
“Then we’ll keep it from them.” Diavolo interrupted with a smirk. “Until you’re comfortable, only you and I - and Barbatos -need know about our pacts.”
“A secret marriage.” Lucifer said with one eyebrow raised.
“We’ve been secret lovers for decades.” Diavolo chuckled. “What’s one more thing?”
