Next up is the Queen of Clubs, Windranger. A funny thing about traditional playing cards is that their hands are reallyĀ small. Weāre so used to the designs that we donāt notice but when you apply that to new art it becomes really obvious. I donāt like to be a slave to reference but in this case the issue was that larger hands need bigger weapons. Ā And a bigger bow would get cut off somewhere. The hair was something I tried multiple ways, obviously Windranger should have red or reddish orange hair. Ā I tried both red (the color of the hearts) and new tones. The problem with both was it was the onlyĀ card with that many colors. So either it would stick out or Iād need to use accent colors for all the other cards. The trouble is that the accent for each card would be different. Ā Tidehunter doesnāt need red/orange for an accent, if anything heād need a blue. I tested this idea on a set of finished designs and the result looked like a clown party. So it was a shame to lose the red hair but sacrificing the representation of any single hero was necessary to make the deck match.

hello :) very nice work on the dota cards! :) what is the ace of diamonds supposed to be again? Thanks! :)
Thanks for the question!Iāve had to keep all this quiet for months so youāll forgive me if I expand on your question a bit. Ā Work on the aces and also the suit pips (diamond, spade, etc) came fairly late in the process. Ā Most of the character cards were done, the color scheme was decided etc. Ā We could have easily just shipped with normal suits but I had been trying for months to come up with a theme so I was stubborn about it.I kept working with the idea of a lightning theme for blue (thinking mostly about Double-Damage runes) and the Heart of Terrasque for hearts was a given. Ā But it was Valve who recommended using items for all the suits. Ā So Mjollnir was easy (bonus, it still has lightning!), butterfly for green, HoT for redā¦but purple??Purple is used generally in dota for invisibility but also vision (dust, etc). Ā The problem is that āinvisibilityā is about as abstract of a concept as you can get when youāre doing graphic illustration. Ā And in order to match the other aces I needed the ābiggestā purple item you can get. Which is arguably Silver Edge. The downside is that Silver Edge is super asymmetrical as a design so finding ways to fit it into a diamond areā¦difficult at best. Ā Also I was able to get hi-res of the in-game icons but those donāt include the whole blade. Ā So I had to try to logically deduce what the rest of it looked like. Ā I even tried a lot of versions of it matched with Shadow Blade (Lotharās) which has a much more regonizable shape to help even it out but it wasnāt successful.
So in the end I remembered that Dota2 uses the āeyeā icon to help imply vision/visibility and I thought that was a good balance and it helped give some symmetry to the design. Ā Version 3 you can see there is closeĀ to what the final design was (I removed the mottling on the blade but thatās about it)If anyone has any other questions about the cards feel free to ask, you can also see more in the interview I did with Valve here.tl;dr Itās Silver Edge :P

Finally for this set is the King of Clubs, WraithKing. This was one of the moreĀ āobviousā characters to include given the King in the name. I started him out in as the King of Hearts though because I felt like that matched thematically and I wanted to do a Skeleton King/Wraith King top-to-bottom flip. The first thing that happened was that Valve said that Skeleton King was a no-go (so heads up for other workshop artists considering something similar). The next thing was that Monkey King was announced and worked far better in theĀ āredā color scheme than WK did. Ā Unfortunately this did boot out Sand King from the King of Clubs spot which is why he didnāt make it into the deck. So this card wound up killing both Sand King and Skeleton King from appearing in the deck. T_T Ā RIP Skeleton King: He died the way he died; dead Tune in tomorrow for the Diamonds!
FYI the Secret Shop is down and Iām not sure when itās going to be back up, but in the mean time I want to talk about the cards. Iāll be talking about one per day.
First up is the Jack of Clubs, Tidehunter
Clubs is the āgreenā suit in the deck so there were a lot of options to pick from. Natureās Prophet was my initial choice, as was Rubick, I even made several drawings for both. Tidehunter was recommended by Valve because not only is he a fan favorite but TI7ā²s theme is aquatic and the card could then be paired with a Kunkka card (Jack of Spades)
One of the challenges was trying to render the character using so few colors. Having the skin green and the stripes black was just too dark overall and traditional cards are rendered with faces the color of the paper so I didnāt want to get too far away from it.
The anchors proved a challenge because you canāt run designs too close to the edge with playing cards. Half an anchor doesnāt look very good so I went diagonal with it but in doing so there werenāt any easy references to pull for the interior shapes. I did manage to include the blink-dagger motif; something I had in a very old Sand King card that I had to drop. Check in tomorrow for our next card, the Queen of Clubs, Windranger.
Finally sharing all my cover variants for the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers comic! This actually all started when I did the Green & White RangersĀ prints for Gallery Nucleus. Those were then turned into covers which then turned into a whole series of covers spanning 8 months. Lots of learning and challenges with these but Iām very proud to have contributed in a small way to something I was absolutely crazy about as a kid.Ā
