Chapter 1: Coming Home

Summary: Steven decides he’s not ready to leave beach city

It’s been a few months since Steven left beach city as an attempt to heal. So far he’s seen 5 states and getting futher and futher away from home. He hasn’t had a pink outburst since he tried to shatter White Diamond and the gems haven’t reported any problems to him since he left. So everything must be okay right? Of course. But, it still felt lonely. Connie hasn’t met him up yet. Steven laid in his hotel bed looking through really old pictures of him and the crystal gems, Garnets wedding, pictures of him and Peridot, him and Connie as well. He chuckled at the few pictures he found of Spinel that was taken than none other by herself. Some making silly faces, then one that was a normal picture of her smiling. She mustve snuck it out of his pocket when he went to Homeworld. He smiled to himself and then frowned deeply. A familiar feeling crept on him. Emptiness.

It was at that moment Connie called him on FaceTime. Steven picked up and smiled softly as he greeted her “hey Connie” he says “Steven! How are you? Haven’t heard from you in a couple days” she said with a relieved look on her face. “I’m okay! I’m just a little homesick. I’ve been having a good time though” he said before sitting up. “How’ve you been? How’s college prep?” He asks. “It’s going great! I’m going back to space camp soon, I’m so excited. I’m actually waiting for a few of my classmates from there to come over, we’re going out tonight!” she says excitedly “I wish you could come”

“I wish I could come too” he frowned “it gets pretty lonely being completely on my own.” Connie’s eyes soften “if you want I could send lion to come get you, can have you back by tonight. We do miss you over here” Steven shook his head “no it’s okay, I have to get to bed soon anyways.. I leave early tomorrow” Connie looked disappointed for a moment but then smiled “okay.” She said “hey, Steven?” “Yes?” he responds, clearly unhappy “if you’re not happy being away from here, there’s no shame in coming back. But look, my friends are outside waiting for me I’ll text you” she said “okay talk to you later” they say goodbye and he hangs up. He lays back in bed and begins to think about what Connie suggested.

“If I leave now and take the interstate road I can get there a couple nights from today” he thought to himself. He looked at his clock: 10:00pm it read. He remembered what his therapist said about doing what he feels will make him happy. He thought for a moment more and decided that he wants to be back in beach city. Given him being 16, he had all the time in the world to plan his future. He packed up his bags, his guitar, and set out for the road. It was time to come home. He smiled to himself, excited about coming back to Beach City. This time it would be perfect. Right?

Just as Steven estimated, it took him two nights to get back to Beach City. It was around 7:00pm. A few townies saw him and waved as he passed by. Making him more excited to come home. Granted it was late and he’d be going bed as soon as he got back. But he was home and that was all that mattered. He eventually pulls over on his old spot. Leaving his stuff in the car to pick up later he runs up the hill to the latter. “Guys I came back!” he calls out. He’s met by Greg peering out from the window and smiling, The older man turned to the gems and says “guys Steven is back” the gems and Greg all run out to give Steven a hug. “We missed you much!” Said Pearl “don’t leave us again dude!” Amethyst says as she has tears and snot running down her face “It was very boring without you” Garnet says. “It’s good to have you home Stu-ball” Greg said smiling. “I missed you guys too! How’s everything been? No enemy gem troubles lately?” Steven asked hoping for the best. Pearl chuckled and scratched the back of her head. “Oh about that” Steven sighed “uh-oh”

“Bluebird came back and tried to attack again” Garnet said. “We kicked her ass and bubbled her though! ” Amethyst added. Steven looked down “she must’ve known I was gone. This will never stop will it?” Pearl put her hand on Steven’s shoulder “hey now it’s okay, it just happened we haven’t had any other issues before, even then we have eachother” she says with a kind smile. Steven smiled nodded “okay” he says. “Let’s go get your stuff and get inside.” Said Greg. They all went down the hill to grab Stevens stuff and headed back for the house. It then Steven noticed a new edition to the house. “Hey whats that?” Steven asks Garnet. “Those are two new rooms. One of them belongs to you” she says “did you know I was coming back?” he asked. Garnet smiles and nods “of course I did” she said. As soon as they get inside they immediately start running everything up to Stevens new room.

“So, is anyone in the room beside me?” Steven asked Amethyst. The purple gem sat on the freshly made bed. “Oh yeah. Spinel moved in a month after you left. She’s at work right now” a look of surprise came onto his face “she did?? What happened to Homeworld?” He asks “she was ready to leave, she wanted to check out joe earth was. She’s doing pretty good over here. She really misses you too.” Amethyst said. Steven smiled “you know, I miss her too.” he said. Amethyst smiles at him “well she’ll be back soon, just get settled in okay!” with that, she leaves the room and returns to her temple.

A few hours pass and it was now 10:00pm. Steven was thinking about everything. Especially Bluebird coming back. Did she know he was gone? How long had she known? Has she been watching him? What did this mean for the future? Who else is out there? Steven sighed and rolled out of bed. He made his over to Garnets temple to see the bubbled gems. Surely enough Garnet was not there, was probably meditating outside somewhere. He looked at Eyeball Ruby and Aquamarine, who were bubbled separately. He began to think again, ignoring the sound of someone coming into the house. Once he snaps out of it he walks back out and heads towards his room. Before he actually got into his room a familiar voice softly said “Steven?” he turned around and saw Spinel, who was wearing a big t-shirt and bedroom slippers that looked like bunnies. “Spinel” Steven said as he embraced her. At this point he glad to see everyone. He even was suprised by how much he really missed the pigtailed gem. Spinel blushes softly and hugs him back “you’re home” she said. “Yes it just got too lonely” he said

They were soon in Spinels room, which was decked out in a few anime posters, a pink video game console , cat tree for Cat Steven to play and lounge in and on the bed there was one of those big stuffed bears. They both had a mug of hot chocolate Spinel prepared. While Steven was gone Greg taught her how to make some the way he made it for Steven.

“So hows everything been?” he asks. “Everything’s been pretty swell. I moved down hear after you left and I got a job and I go to school in the morning too! I have so many friends now” Spinel said, smiling brightly. Steven looked at her and smiled back at her, it did make him happy that she seems to be making more changes for the better “well that’s good, I’m glad you’re doing okay”

“You were right Steven, I did make a change. And it was because of you” she said “I’m a better person now and the other gems have been helping me too. Thank you so much Steven” she places her hand onto his shoulder. “Anyways enough about me, how have you been?” the hybrid thought for a moment while he took a sip of the hot chocolate. “Honestly? I thought I was fine I haven’t been glowing pink or growing jurassicly. But, maybe I made a mistake trying to move” he said “what do you mean?” the pink gem asked. “I left Beach City because I thought getting away would help me. And it did, a little but eventually it started getting lonely. Connie kept telling me about school and going out — and now she’s going to Space Camp again, the gems and my dad have been busy so we were barely keeping in contact. I didn’t even you know moved in until three hours ago. You’re going to school and have a job. I just missed so much. That’s not even all, while you were at work I came back to the gems just got into a fight and bubbled Bluebird whose....Aquamarine and Eyeball..” before he continued he saw the concerned look on Spinel’s face and and sighed deeply “I’m sorry” Steven said as he looked down. “I shouldn’t throw all my problems on you” Spinel shook her head “No it’s okay! You need to talk about your feelings sunshine. You’re always there for other people and always listen to our problems. You listened to mine. Our rooms are right next to together. You can always talk to me” Spinel said sweetly. Steven looked up her, his eyes tearing up. He once again hugged her as he started crying. “Thank you” he said.
