I felt the massive scale of this postmodern work made it a fine example of escaping the confines of museums. Much like their work “The Gates”, Christo and Jeanne-Claude rejected any institutional funding for the project, instead funding it entirely by themselves. This put them outside of the museum system as well as literally outside of the museum!

Had the extreme pleasure to spend an hour and a half with Christo yesterday on behalf of @artloftsfl. “Surrounded Islands (1980-83)” cannot be underestimated as a cultural turning point for Miami, and hearing the tales of him and Jeanne-Claude’s journey to compete projects of this scale, to deal with the bureaucracy, and to engage hundreds of community workers was illuminating and inspiring. He said art keeps him young and it’s clearly true as I was hustling around the museum to keep up with him, at 83! He’s speaking tonight at @pamm and I encourage everyone to attend, and the massive, comprehensive exhibit is up through February and it truly is spectacular and awe-inducing.
