Today in #FreyjaConsumesArt I get to show you @yahgulanaas at @youraga ! I wrote a review about his art book this spring, and I've been really excited to see this since I saw his name on the roster of the Comic Sans exhibition!! I'm happy to say it looks even cooler in person 💜 I love the flow of the linework and the bold, flat colours. Yahgulanaas's art combines thoughts about play and storytelling. His Haida manga plays with characters, plot, and layout. Here the layout becomes a character too, forming totem motifs. I was excited to learn that he intends for the story to be inconsequential (ie, is it a comic because the art is in a sequence? And is it really in a sequence? 🤔) and that owners of the book are welcome to undo the binding to create new sequences! *mind blown* Fantastic work in a great show! In this edition of Freyja Consumes Art, I'd like to tell you about a new-to-me artist! Michael Nicholl Yahgulanaas @yahgulanaas is a contemporary Haida artist who creates Haida manga. He uses Haida stories and iconography and combines it with manga drawing techniques to create something completely new! Yahgulanaas also works with different scales and different mediums, and he has published several graphic novels, made large public art sculptures, had exhibitions with sculptures from car parts and large paintings and drawings. I really like his swoopy line drawings and his mixed media stuff. My favourite art shows the process within the finished product and I love that I can learn so much from each piece he does!
