so hot take i don't think any of what Leonide did was supposed to be "redemption" in any way. she was selfishly trying to get her own family out while taking someone else's (SecUnit's) family hostage to do so. she had had endless opportunities to use her position to make things a little less terrible. (yes she had been on the "don't kidnap everyone on alien hell planet" team but still.) she, of literally any other named character we've met, had the power to shift the system toward something better. she didn't. but even so. she always had been, and remained, the very archetype of the greedy corporate boss whose fault it was that everyone else was suffering. and even she -- even she, with all her seniority and influence -- was forced to beg an outsystem entity to save her family from corporate slavery. the point wasn't that she had finally decided to betray the system that she had upheld, but that the system punishes even those who are complicit in its abuse. I wish she could have made it out. she would have been a formidable ally if she had gotten to Preservation or Mihira. but she didn't get that chance, and so even to her death, she remained complicit.
I kind of feel bad for Leonide cause imagine you arrive at a system your company basically bought and weird things happen and your other ship fires at you and then you meet some humans who weren't supposed to be there and
a) you try to take one of them hostage but their SecUnit takes you hostage and embarrasses you in front of your crew instead
b) that bunch of humans finds out about alien contamination
c) for whatever reason they are roaming on surface
So you go on a mission to a remote separatist installation, possibly happy to be free from that bullshit, with a clear task
and then there's them again, and
d) they send their fuckass SecUnit instead of you know A REAL PERSON to a meeting with you, which, disrespectful
e) they prepare a video presentation or whatever, what the fuck is wrong with them
f) your colleagues backstab you right at the meeting with that fucking bunch
g) you have no choice but to follow the weirdos
h) All that:
«One question,” Leonide said, keeping her attention on the control interface. “Is that actually a SecUnit?” “You know,” Iris said conversationally, taking a pad out of the medical kit and wiping bloodstains off ART-drone’s carapace. “You can mind your own damn business.” “Oversensitive,” Leonide said, but she must have been too tired to hide the frustration in her voice. She was quiet for 5.3 seconds, then burst out, “Is someone actually watching entertainment in the feed right now?” Oops, I guess there was a little bleedover, probably from ART-drone’s end. Deadpan, Tarik said, “I always watch entertainment when I fly.” Leonide let out her breath in an exasperated hiss. “Fuck you all.»
I love Supervisor Leonide in a “support women’s wrongs” kind of way
Holy shit, Leonide and her relatives and almost her kids were killed by her husband? Ex-husband? They shared one partner but hated each other? I am fuzzy on the details but confident this was telenovela levels of drama. Was this entire book the casualties of a messy divorce and we only found out at the end?
…Murderbot was living the kind of plot its favorite serials would absolutely include and it didn’t even know until it had been shot far too many times to enjoy it. Pity.

Spoilers for Platform Decay!!!!
I really wish Leonide had lived. I understand that her death raised the stakes and made Murderbot accept her request. But I wish she had lived solely for the interactions she would have had with Murderbot and the Mensah Family during the book. Her corporate ideals clashing with Preservation values, she and Murderbot snarking back and forth and she grapples with the fact that it is a rouge SecUnit and that it has a personality.
Leonide's reaction to Murderbot's everything: from its clever ideas, insane hacking skills, lack of actual murder and the way it recruits other bots into the cause to how it cares so so much about helping humans, would have been amazing. Leonide's world view rapidly expanding during the book because of this grumpy media-obsessed SecUnit, combined with these tough but kind Preservationers, would have been so, so good.
Hey so. I think the cat might soon be out of the bag about ART, and its existence.
The "distract" part of Retrieval Plan B01: Distract and Extract involved convincing the colonists that a talking armed transport was independently holding both the human crew and the colonists hostage, but it could possibly be persuaded to not blow anything else up if the colonists surrended the captured Secunit. ART represented itself at that meeting through a drone.
The plan worked, and the impression apparently lingered because Secunit mentions in System Collapse that Three was pretending to be an augmented human and not a SecUnit "mostly to fend off conversations about how much the giant angry planet-bombing transport likes this SecUnit and will it lose its mind if a rock falls on it or something". Which means there is a very good chance this chatter did occur and Barish-Estranza heard at least one version of the story.
Then in the separatist colony Supervisor Leonide hears ART and Secunit bantering over the feed, and Secunit is pretty sure she was assuming ART was a "weird human who liked Secunits." After which Leonide meets their group and discovers that the voice belongs to a drone. A drone that matches the description of the crazy planet-bombing Secunit-liking transport's drone that she may or may not have heard about from the colonists, and a drone that cannot be being operated by a remote human pilot because they're all in the terraforming engine's blackout zone.
Leonide is smart, and observant, and she has a good memory.
It's not clear if Leonide heard ARTdrone's comment that "The bot pilot is also me." She probably didn't, that was probably on its private feed with Secunit. But even without that, Leonide has a lot of very interesting rumors to share about the University of Mihara and New Tideland's MIs.
RIP Supervisor Leonide. You would have absolutely hated being adopted by PresAux and being deprogrammed by Dr Bharadwaj and eventually learning how to ask for help like a normal person instead of needing the threat of violence to get what you want.
