I've been rewatching Supernatural from season one straight through every episode with my mom. So far we've made it to season 8 episode 21 The Great Escapist). Sam is going through the trials, Dean is mother henning him, Kevin is working hard on the tablets & Cas is on the run from heaven.

Naomi & her goons finally get Cas's attention by killing humans in the Bigerson restaurants. She mentions that Cas had been in Eygpt when angels had gone & slain all baby boys without lambs blood over their doors. We quickly find out she has been wiping Castiel's memory for a very long time & that he's always been a bit of a rebel.

This made me think. So, Cas is apparently much older than he thinks he is which is already extremely old (as he's said). So out of the billions possibly trillions of years Castiel has been around, he had apparently (according to Naomi) been rebellious. But the people (more like person, more on that later...) that finally got him to continue to rebel was Dean Winchester & subsequently anyone who he cares for.

Dean Winchester, the Righteous Man, protective big brother/father, bad ass hunter, etc etc. was the final push for Castiel's fall from heaven. "DEAN WINCHESTER HAS BEEN SAVED!!!" rang out loud and clear over angel radio for all to hear. From the moment they met Cas has been looking out for Dean and his loved ones. Every time Castiel was reigned in by heaven he came back with 10 times the gusto & fight to help Humanity, his humanity (Dean) & kick ass.
