Plot Bunnies: Maddox Darling

“The only way I unofficially incorporate Superman in my classroom is I explicitly bring up the value of hope. No one can argue with that, right?”

When Clark Kent volunteers to write a piece about a prominent citizen in Metropolis, everyone is a bit surprised- and a little amused- when Clark picks local middle school teacher, Maddox Darling.

To Clark though, teaching middle school science is important. Of course, he can’t help but ask Maddox about his other “name to fame”- the videos he posts that are pro-Superman and anti-Lex Luthor. While most are with Maddox, there are a few naysayers. When asked about if he brings his “Superman ideology” into the classroom, Maddox has the perfect response.

The only problem- or maybe lack of a problem?

Clark finds himself drawn to Maddox after the interview, in a way he never has been to another man before.

Great- just what he needed: a new gender to be down for and fumble with.

Except Maddox might be just hopeless when it comes to this situation as Clark is.

Nova Reeve is a bright, fast-rising reporter at the Daily Planet, known for her sharp instincts, quiet courage, and an almost uncanny ability to spot the human story behind world-shaking headlines. With a background in digital journalism and investigative research, Nova thrives in Metropolis’s fast-paced newsroom, often acting as the bridge between old-school reporting and the Planet’s modern future. Though she can come across as soft-spoken at first, there’s a steely resolve beneath her warmth - especially when truth, justice, or the people she cares about are at stake. She forms a natural bond with photographer Jimmy Olsen, drawn to his sincerity, optimism, and moral compass in a city full of secrets. Their relationship is built on mutual support, late-night takeout in the newsroom, and a shared belief that even in a world of gods and heroes, ordinary people still matter. 

Introducing: Annabeth Curio

Annabeth Curio was first introduced in DC comics as an intern at the Daily Planet, an opportunity to give Clark Kent someone to mentor outside of his superpowers. She was quickly paired up with Supergirl as both a ‘girl in the chair’, and a romantic interest.

In Smallville she carries the same role, often seen as annoying by Clark who’s trying to keep his secret. Lois Lane takes her under her wing and she becomes a formidable reporter who Kara can’t seem to stay away from

Zack Snyder’s version of the character is debated a lot in fandom spaces. Bethany Curio is a daily planet reporter who stumbles upon a Kryptonian pod and absorbs the DNA left in it, giving her Kryptonian powers. She is then labelled as ‘Supergirl’, causing uproar among comic fans. Some enjoy the changes, expressing their love the idea of a new story, others wanting to see their favourite character as a superhero.

Annabeth wasn’t originally supposed to be in the Arrowverse, but after the pilot for Supergirl was released, fans disliked the overly male energy brought by the obviously planned Love Triangle. ‘Beth Curio’ appeared halfway through the season as a reporter Cat Grant had taken from The Daily Planet and from under Lois Lane. It’s revealed she knows Clark Kent is Superman, and this makes Kara trust her. The series ends with the two married.

James Gunn introduced Annabeth straight off the bat in ‘Superman’, returning to her role as an intern at the daily planet. She has a small screen time but is confirmed to be in Supergirl (2026). James Gunn has assured fans that he wouldn’t want to alter Annabeth and Kara’s relationship, staring ‘they’re a bit like Lois and Clark’.
