For this week’s #superfriendssunday, I’ve had the joy of hosting Jazz Week! I’ve done a week of jazz albums leading up to it, and I’ve saved the biggest artist in my heart for today… I’m hardly unique in my love for Miles Davis, but hey, when fans are right they’re right! Miles is the artist who kicked off my latest and still-ongoing jazz obsession about six years ago, and specifically it was his electric period. In a Silent Way, Bitches Brew, Jack Johnson, and the Fillmore set are sacred texts, perfect in every planned and unplanned note. My In a Silent Way and Jack Johnson copies are #mobilefidelity pressings, two of the best-sounding (and most valuable!) records I own. Coming in on the home stretch of #superfriendssunday 12 Days of Christmas Challenge: 11 Pipers Piping, an album with horns! I wanted one with not only horns (and there are a lot of great ones on this record) but also flute, as the title would suggest. Eric Dolphy is a favorite of mine, the perfect balance between accessible and “out there” jazz. For this week’s #superfriendssunday , @biomechalien asked us to pick an album that reminds us of summer vacation! Growing up, my family’s mode of vacation was long, multi-destination road trips. As a teenager I treasured the long stretches of alone time in the back of the van, because I had music to hear. I associate a lot of great music with these memories, but one of my strongest memories is of the summer I was getting into Led Zeppelin. I have distinct memories of watching the road pass lazily by as Ramble On played on my Discman, which is trite I know, but I was a teenager—they’re not immunized to clichés yet!
