It’s #superfriendssunday again! This week, @funkcroci asked us to pick a great Various Artists album. I chose my favorite early reggae compilations: a sampling of Trojan Records best-ofs and the soundtrack of The Harder They Come. I don’t listen to a lot of compilations, but I listen a lot to these because they collect songs that just don’t come on LPs, many of them by bands that only ever released a handful of 45s before disappearing. This was a big year for the early alternative rock scene, including one of my personal favorite albums of all time. You’re Living All Over Me is Dinosaur Jr’s masterpiece, from the first song’s haunting harmony vocals with Sonic Youth’s Lee Ranaldo to the final track’s customary Lou Barlow noise assault. The bizarre jazz chords, incredible solos, inventive basslines, and of course the never-ending assault of GIANT FUZZ. Absolute classic.
