Can't wait for school to start back up so I can get free therapy again
A story (which lives only in my head, has not made it even to a scrap piece of paper, and yet I keep rewriting) where someone disappears from their home universe, establishes a new life in that new universe, and accidentally pops back into their home universe ten years later at a memorial to them and all the people they disappeared with is, uh. Going places. Keep getting hung up on them seeing their old friends and family and being basically unrecognizable and constantly running the “should I introduce myself to them as how they know me or how I know myself and if I tell them I’m their presumed-dead family member how awkward will it be and what will I do to avoid it” calculation in their head. They almost get recognized a few times but every time it happens they react so awkwardly and unsure that it convinces everyone they just don’t know how to react to being accused of being a long-lost family member and they move on. “My sister had a scar like that” “oh... sorry?” “My child had eyes of a similar color to yours” “thanks??” and they’re mostly checking in on their family under the guise of a chatty stranger and go home at the end of the day. Like, it was nice to see them! Nice hanging out! Nice day all around. Weird though, and they have a job and a place to be and they’re going drinking with all their universe-travelling friends tonight to celebrate the anniversary so. Not gonna stick around.
I. hate. computer work. so much.
Like, it is a part of my job. I need to do it. But I also loathe it with every fiber of my being and will procrastinate it until I die.
Send me out to collect specimens! I can do that for HOURS non-stop (until I get hungry). But I cannot sit on a computer and sort data like that. I would rather die. Please just let me go water the plants again. Or something. Please.
I GUESS I can do the mindless stuff. Mindless organization isn’t the WORST but it is pretty bad. But the identification of specimens! Tracking down which FUCKING family something I’ve never seen before is in will haunt me to my dying day. Please someone tell my faculty supervisor that I don’t know enough about plants yet to do this reliably and tracing my way through the key is SLOW FUCKING GOING when I’m looking up what an achene is every few minutes.
The amount of times I’ve come across someone baffled that humans evolved from “fish” is just really disheartening. They’ll say “oh yeah I believe in evolution” (which is phrasing that bothers me immensely but... not the point) and they’ll say “humans evolved from [either ape or chimp]” which isn’t totally accurate but like, sure. And then I’ll say “for sure, and those evolved from tiktaalik, which was a fish” and they just. Don’t believe me. What exactly do these people think evolution is, if they don’t think apes came from anywhere.

I’m such a fucking midwesterner. I was on a call with my dad for interview prep and he said “Well, I should probably let you go soon” and we kept talking for ten minutes and then it took us a cumulative 10 sentences of “we’ll talk soon” “yeah maybe tomorrow” “I’ll talk with you then” “oh yes talk to you then” “good night” “good night” “bye!” for either of us to actually hang up the phone
I was going to do sane things for next year where I would finish off my required courses and then take 3 biology classes and a geography course, where 2 of them (bee science and hiking) would only last half a semester - this would land me at 16 credits. That’s normal.
NOW however. NOW. What if I did 4 full-semester biology courses and applied to do one of the labs asynchronously so I can have overlapping courses, netting me a full 18, credits! Then I would end the fall semester with FIFTY EIGHT (58) credits, which is so close that I might as well apply for exception and moderate early, making me a junior 3 semesters in.
I haven’t gone to sleep earlier than midnight in a week and I have a 9am class every day.
I found her... Miette...
