Quite often I will hear a song and think to myself “how can I translate the feeling to get from this song into a photoshoot.” Jenny O’s Lazy Jane, Jonathan Wilson’s Can We Really Party Today, Betty Davis’ They Say I’m Different are the most glaringly obvious examples but music is a driving force in basically anything I shoot, Francoise Hardy was a constant inspiration for my Cleo series, and the sweaty passion of Childish Gambino’s Awaken, My Love! is on a loop while working on my Transgressive project. The music of Angelica Rockne always works its way in my playlists, and has left a mark on everything I’ve produced since I first heard her album Queen of San Antonio. Her music is psychedelic country, or Patti Smith if she made Nashville records in the 70′s. I had the absolute pleasure of meeting and shooting Angelica for what would be my final interview for Secretly-Important before I unceremoniously moved on from the site. I worried that in shooting my more erotic art that I might hurt my potential to shoot with musicians that they’d see only that aspect of my work, I don’t really know... that might be in my head, but certainly I hope at some point in the future to shoot Angelica again. For a long time I was embarrassed by these images... I missed focus and felt like these were totally unusable, the beauty of film is that there’s more tolerance for this, look back at notable work from the 20th Century’s greatest photographers and somewhere in their portfolio and you’ll find some images slightly off focus or where they misjudged shutter speed and there’s some blur. I loved this location but I also just enjoyed this brief period I spent capturing a really incredible artist.

Guitar Wolf’s Seiji performed a 2nd encore by himself the other night and I got hit with his sweat. 10/10 would recommend.

Today over at my music website Secretly-Important.com I have an interview up with Angelica Rockne. I wrote a not insignificant number of words about her and her absolutely gorgeous album Queen of San Antonio. Rockne is a really interesting person and she can write seriously impressive music, I feel like you can get a sense for that fascinating aura about her within the shots I took, some of which I’ve already posted others are up on the website along with the article.

Putting together a sweet interview with Angelica Rockne over at Secretly-Important.com along with a photoset we took at the Sunset when she was in town. What I hadn’t anticipated was just how many different looks we could get within the Sunset. We shot in the front bar, against the back wood wall, on the dance floor, and in this hallway covered with stickers. When I think of Angelica’s music it has so many dimensions to it and so shooting in so many varied locations I felt helped represent her sound.
