because theyâre written by writersâŠwho tend to write what they knowâŠwhich tends to not be math  Â
1. Iâm talking about average school mathematics, not Fermatâs last theorem or the intricacies of the Banach-Tarski paradox.
2. Iâm not even talking about anything specific. Most writers, bestselling vampire novel authors excluded, donât include Every. Boring. Detail. of their protagonistâs classes in the books. Thatâs not what I want, either! Just a protagonist who doesnât say âIâm bad at mathsâ like itâs a common personality trait or physical feature. Because it isnât. Let YA protagonists like maths, let them be good at it without being labelled as âthat weird nerdy guy/gal/nb pal who is into maths and therefore uncoolâ, even if that doesnât represent the authorâs experience at school. Because:
3. Writers write about things they donât know, like, all the time. Given, some put more effort into their research than others, but still. J.K. Rowling never went to Hogwarts, J.R.R. Tolkien never threw a ring into a mountain, Stephenie Meyer was never bitten by a vampire, Shakespeare was never turned into a donkey. If writers only wrote about âwhat they knowâ (and, by the way, Iâm willing to bet that nearly every writer has had maths in school) - how boring would literature be?
My highschool girls. Some are missing in action. #throwbackthursday #sundot #novemberkills
