@sundayworst : [ off track ]
sunlight filters through leaves, throwing everything into dappled yellow-green. chris can hear birds twittering on the branches above, but every attempt to crane his neck & spot one is in vain. jeans are dusty, sneakers dirty & rubber-worn, not that chris really seems to either notice or care.
he’s focused on the forest floor beneath them, fingertips occasionally brushing over tree bark as they pass, feeling the bumps & grooves ‘neath the pads of his fingers. these trees are taller than the one he’d saved teddy from falling out of, but he’d be lying if he didn’t think about climbing these ones ( the tips aren’t dead ; they could hold him, right ? ).
❛ hey, man. when y’said you were goin’ for a walk & did i wanna come, i didn’t think you were talkin’ about a fuckin’ hike. ❜
words are directed to the boy accompanying him, words said with amicable ease, bright & sunny. HE’S NOT TOO CONCERNED ----- it’s not particularly like anyone would really notice how long he’s been gone for, anyway. besides : this company is much better, anyway.
it’s only when the sun stars to get lower in the sky, the yellow-green turning to a yellow-gold, that chris realizes he’s recognizing the scenery. he pauses, looking back. just more woods.
❛ stan ? d’you know where we are ? ❜ chris is usually good with directions . . . when he’s been paying attention. he kicks a large rock in front of him, scuffing the toe of his sneaker further. ❛ i think we’ve passed this one before. ❜
