the parentification of jonathan byers hits SO hard, like, can you tell he doesn’t know how to not be needed? because he just has this complete inability to not be needed. he’s so used to dismissing his problems for bigger issues, so used to a life where they’re constantly stressed and struggling and having to step up that once he doesn’t need to anymore (season four) because they’re in a better place financially and will is growing up without him, he spirals. because the system he used to justify everything, to survive, that helped him and his family stay afloat, is no longer working and he can’t ignore his problems, not when there’s no longer a bigger issue to deal with. he starts ignoring college, running away from his family, from nancy, from reality, starts throwing away the things he wants, starts doing weed all the time, stops doing the things he loves, stops picking up his camera, and that’s depression, right there, and he doesn’t even know it. he starts becoming the worse parts of his parents (and he’ll never become his father because he’s too fundamentally good for that but does he know that?), lying and not being there and being too much and not enough at the same time. and he just doesn’t know how to not be needed because it’s his entire purpose. he doesn’t know who he is anymore without it. there’s no point in keeping him around if he’s not needed. no point at all.
i’m so bad at being a person
my ideal sakuino dynamic is ino NOT becoming a medical ninja or pursuing that avenue and despite sakura training under tsunade and becoming insanely strong, sakura’s struggle to stand to what she deems equal to ino is much more slow. sort of like hinata and kageyama??? but not really. ino refuses to shine any less brighter, refuses to slow down, like kageyama, but she’s still waiting for sakura to bloom, has always been the first one to recognize her and lend out a hand to sakura, and is basically like come on, catch up to me. and sakura CHASES relentlessly, similar to hinata.
sakura is defined by her chasing—wanting to stand equal to ino, to naruto, to sasuke—but despite it all, ino has always been her bar, her goal if you will.
despite this, i don’t think ino ever fully understands the struggle sakura has as much as ino is good at reading people, mainly because ino is incapable of not seeing the worth in sakura. from the start, she has always seen sakura’s worth and regards her as somebody that makes her starstruck, just one that needs more prodding to reveal it. on some level, she understands sakura’s self esteem issues and desperate desire to be better, but it’s hard for her to wholly and maturely understand and accept at first, especially through the raw hurt of being cut off, even if sakura does it to try to stand on par with ino instead of behind her.
sakura is always being helped by ino and desperately wants to be on an equal playing field and help back, and having that slow development until sakura finally beats her at something or ties with her, as opposed to having it happen at chunin exams (prolonging sakura’s fight w ino or if it does happen, Ino acknowledges sakura’s growth and does say sakura put up a good fight), would be so much more satisfying.
anyway, ino and sakura both finally acknowledge each other and sakura feels confident enough to stay on par w naruto anf sasuke as well, and sakura realizes, hey, oh, oh. i love her. and i just love the idea of ino has realized early on she loved sakura and just resigned herself to never being able to have her and just supporting her. sakura, on the other hand, was just so hellbent on trying to become someone ino could rely on that she’s never considered anything else but now that she has become “equal,” it’s just STRAIGHT pining from there.
of course, the comphet for sasuke is still there and sasuke had just been an excuse for sakura to break away from ino’s “shadow” but also, despite sort of understanding this, ino still thinks sakura wants sasuke CUE sakura freaking just full on wooing ino . and i think it would just be so. cute.
so much teasing too. they bring out the worst in each other in a way that wraps back around to good especially with the mask sakura presents herself with to the rest of society (inner vs outer sakura) that falls away with ino and ino’s free expression and being seen + supported with sakura
