PROTIP for Americans: visit charity shops. They go to a good cause, they sell all sorts of things (candy, coffee, household wares) and they could save you a bit of cash on the little things you discover you need. Also, Oxfam sell cards that are donations for neat things, like honeybees and water for villages in need - which is a cool, lasting souvenir if you need a gift. So, if you need to part with anything gently used (for packing space) or you need a bag to get loot home, consider using a charity shop.
