Starling's Tip Of the Day:
I had a conversation with someone recently about practicing witchcraft while living under the roof of strict religious parents, and I would like to impart some of my thoughts on the subject in the case that anyone needs it.
I, myself, grew up in the heart of the "bible belt" with very Christian parents. While I am thankful that they chilled out as I got older, I know that some of you out there are feeling stuck. In this post, I wish to create a list of ways to discreetly practice magic and stay under the radar when dealing with strict parents.
(Some of these tips are things I discovered myself, some are from friends, and a few are picked up from the internet along the way. All in all, I hope perhaps this may find someone who needs it.)
Subtle Witchcraft:
When stirring coffee or tea, repeat affirmations in your head or move the spoon/stick in the shape of a sigil.
When doing makeup or skincare, put the product on your face with your finger in the shape of sigils before smoothing it out.
Necklaces can be used as easy and discreet pendulums.
Regular playing cards have been historically used in place of tarot cards for years. Google "Cartomancy" for details. (Be sure to erase search history if it's something they check!)
Use a regular clear water bottle on your windowsill to create sun or moon water. Works just as well as pretty glass jars and doesn't look suspicious!
You can anoint your pulse points/chakras with moon/sun water as a quick and easy spell. (Or use it to take your meds like I do haha.) If you use a spray bottle when styling your hair, you can use it for that too!
Taking up Yoga/Tai Chi as either a hobby or for your mental health is an excellent way to practice focus and the basics of energy work.
Sigils can be drawn in the air with your finger! Just imagine the energy and intention flowing from you out into the world around you.
If you're a fan of scented candles or wax melts and allowed to burn them, you can use them for a spell instead of buying dedicated candles for it.
Hiding the Evidence:
If you have parents that don't check your room often, then hiding spell-work is a bit easier. My first altar was in a hat box under my bed. Some other good places could be a jewelry box, a dresser drawer, or a shoe box on the top shelf of your closet.
Having parents that scour everything is exhausting, but here are a couple of my favorite hiding tips:
I used to tape small, light items to the top of fan blades. Just don't turn it on too high! You can also put sigils up there. (If you can't tell, I'm a huge proponent of sigils...)
This one takes a bit of crafting, but hollowing out a book is something that I used to do out of necessity, but now I continue for fun! Just make sure it's not a book that gets moved often.
Create your Book of Shadows in Minecraft! (You can even build yourself a little witchy sanctuary with seven cats around it like I did lol.)
Drop stuff into shoes and boots! (Please be careful when getting dressed or you may stub your toe.)
Hang a plastic grocery bag on a hanger and put a sweater over it in your closet.
If you have a box-spring under your mattress, you can cut a small hole in the underneath side and stick things up in there to hide it.
Birthday candles burn for an astonishingly long amount of time, so you can blow them out after a spell and use them again later!
The smell of incense, palo santo, and smudge sticks will travel through your house no matter how much you think you can stop it, and the scent sticks to your hair and clothes worse than a bonfire. (Trust me on this one.) If you want to cleanse something, I recommend using crystals or simply your intention and energy.
Final Notes:
It is okay to not have a bunch of crystals, candles, herbs, books, and oils. Intention and the belief are the real ingredients you need.
It is okay to not have a special space dedicated to your deity. If you cannot create an altar, or you must take it down for some reason, the vast majority of deities will not feel offended or that you are unworthy of their attention because of this.
It is okay to be unable to leave physical offerings for a deity. Prayers are enough. Spells done in their name are enough. Your effort and intention is enough.
I hope this post finds those that need it. Please share if you feel inclined, but it is not necessary. Feel free to ask any questions in the comments or in DMs. And for anyone who needs to hear it today:
You are loved. You have a purpose. It will all be okay.
