Subsequence Combines Classic Charm and Innovation
Subsequence is a thrilling single-player, story-driven adventure game that brings classic old-school charm to both Linux and Windows PC. Thanks to the creative brilliance of Zoemi Games. Due to make its way onto Steam.
Every once in a while, a title comes along that reminds us why we fell in love with gaming in the first place. Subsequence is that game a wild, heartfelt, and sometimes hilarious story-driven adventure built by one man, Jakub Pilař (aka Zoemi Games), who’s been grinding away at this project in his spare time for the last ten years. That’s right. Ten years. Two kids, one new keyboard, and countless code restarts later, and this underground dream is finally surfacing. And that even includes native support.
I'm definitely planning Linux support as it is a native part of the Unity engine project export/build the game.
Zoemi just confirmed that Subsequence will have a native Linux release, meaning smooth performance, and likely full Steam Deck support too.
Set in a mysterious research facility buried beneath the earth (and sometimes above it… in space), Subsequence throws players into the shoes of Vicky, a quick-witted heroine who suddenly finds herself trapped in a world gone completely off the rails. What starts as a normal day at work quickly spirals into a desperate fight for survival. Doing so through flooded tunnels, burning elevator shafts, and suspiciously dangerous toilets.
The gameplay balances tension and humor in all the right ways. One moment, you’re holding your breath in a dark corridor, while praying that thing in the shadows isn’t moving. The next, you’re laughing at Vicky’s deadpan reaction to being nearly sliced in half by a laser beam. (Pro tip: don’t walk into the lasers.)
Subsequence Gameplay Trailer
Gameplay-wise, Subsequence is all about clever problem-solving, exploration, and item-based puzzles. You’ll collect weird gadgets, use them in weirder ways, and uncover bits of story hidden behind the walls of the crumbling facility. The puzzles are logical but never punishing, and they make you feel smart every time you figure one out.
And the world? It’s gorgeous in a gritty kind of way a mix of colorful sci-fi labs, eerie flooded tunnels, and the sterile perfection of a spaceship’s interior. Between the chaos, you’ll even get to explore Vicky’s cozy home (where a cute little creature apparently claims its territory… repeatedly).
Subsequence doesn’t take itself too seriously, which makes it all the more charming. The conversations are deep, funny, and occasionally absurd, with no dialogue choices. You just listen and enjoy the ride.
Best part? You can play the entire thing with just WASDE or a gamepad. No complicated key bindings, no tutorial walls of text, just pure, immersive story-driven adventure that even your PC will like.
So mark your calendars, Subsequence launches in March 2026 on Linux and Windows PC via Steam. It’s a one-man indie passion project that’s equal parts tension, laughter, and heart. After a decade in the making, this underground journey deserves to be played. Preferably with the lights off and your favourite beverage in hand.
