Finally watched the new Avatar Aang movie, now thats it’s officially released. (Paramount release it in theaters!!!) It was visually stunning, the animation was truly incredible. My god the background illustrations and the choreography?! Floored. The music?? Absolutely beautiful. The plot was interesting but formulaic. I did like how it gave space to explore Aang’s grief and guilt. Because it was only 90 minutes, it definitely focused on Aang alone and we didn’t dive too deeply into the other Gaang, which bothered me. I wished they went for a more group setting story since we are revisiting the characters. Makes me want more movies in this style focusing on each member. That would be so incredible.
I have a few critiques: I feel like the dialogue was a little simple at times. I don’t know if that was the fact that the movie had limited time, but it felt stunted at times. There were some great dialogue scenes too, but sometimes there was an awkwardness that occurred at times. Other critique was how I feel like Toph and Sokka and even Zuko and Katara, had their personalities really simplified, with Sokka being delegated to comedic relief, which was a little disappointing. Especially given how much time had changed and how mature they had became at the end of the OG series. Especially with the plot surrounding nonbenders vs benders, I feel like they could have used Sokka’s position as a non bender in the group to cause some conflict. But perhaps we needed a longer runtime for that. 🤷♀️
Regardless, I enjoyed it and I hope they put it in more theaters bc I would love to see it on the big screen!! It made me cry at the end, I never cry with movies. Maybe it was the nostalgia , maybe it was Aang finally forgiving himself? The villain was interesting and morally grey, But he felt predictable as well. I wish the Denied had a more active role.
Also might I add!!! everyone’s character designs were so hot and everyone kept losing their clothes throughout the movie which made me laugh. Avatar in their mid 20s feels odd to watch as a 24 year old. It also awoke the long dormant sleeper agent in me that is the Zuko simp ive always been. My GODs his character designs was so perfect. Im too queer for this shit, everyone was attractive and muscular and it made me want to go to the gym so I could be ripped like that!! That and the Zukka crumbs, of which I haven’t thought about in 6 years. Lol
Avatar Sonum too my GOD my queer soul was shuddering.
Overall, I wish they would have had a more character focused plot and conflict, rather than a huge kaiju-esqe battle at the end of the movie. It was nostalgic and beautiful. But left me wanting just a little more. I would rate it a 7/10, or a 75%.
What are your guys’ thoughts?
