Ok so.

There is...a bit I have to say about Netflix dub with how Kaworu/Tabris was handled.

The only pro I can say about Kaworu’s delivery in the new dub more lies in the voice delivery sounding more straightforward than other VAs. My main grievance with how Kaworu’s character in certain VAs (not that I have problems with the Va themselves but how they dealt with this specific character) lies with that he sounded from either robotic or fairly discomforting. I really liked that he states (in the scene seconds before he deploys his massive AT Field) outright that human hope is borne from sorrow. He doesn’t get purple-prosy about that idea (another grievance of mine in the original dub is that his lines were over-complicated, very unlike a straightforward character like Kaworu).

That is the only pro about how that was handled.

Now. you’ve probably seen these going around (dub and sub):

There’s much wrong with this, and it doesn’t stop at the dancing around the fact that both characters loved each other. I’ve heard from some that this makes Kaworu seem more as if he’s above Shinji, and this is a far, inaccurate departure from Kaworu’s character. 

While I kind of understand that a common theme in Evangelion is unhealthy idealization, Kaworu never talked up about his person to the point of conceit.  Kaworu never wanted idealization. 

Then there’s the fact that this doesn’t work well with Kaworu’s stance on his identity in the original source material. Kaworu is hyper-aware of his identity and the thought of who he is terrifies him; to be the sole person responsible for mass annihilation would be terrifying, no?

Kaworu’s fear being derived from hyper-awareness stems from his acceptance of free will. Eva heavily favors the Free Will aspect of Free  Will vs. Determinism, but like anything beneficial, it holds its downsides. With free will, comes more opportunities you open yourself to. It opens your state of mind to many things, responsibility being the crux of Free Will. It means you can be held accountable and with his dilemma being the debate on whether he should merge with Adam or spare lilim, considering his status as a child of Adam or not, it implicitly shakes him to his core (pun possibly intended?). 

Kaworu’s situation is a damned if you do, damned if you don’t sort, because either way, mass death would be the end result.

okay i’ll preface this by saying i never finished the game bc i didn’t care for any of the characters or the plot so i watched the movies with my gf so this is mostly based off those but yukari as a character and a person irritates me so much?? her clinging to the past so much and being so cowardly when it comes to the dark hour?? when she’s introduced as being unable to use her evoker like. you’re not gonna die just do it?? she just reads as such a fake and useless character to me tbh and it annoys the hell out of me. id deck her if i met her irl
