It's hilarious to me that even back in 1995, the creators of Captain Simian and the Space Monkeys (which even borrowed writers from Star Trek!) saw the homoerotic tension between Kirk & Spock, recreated their dynamic (but Straight) in Chuck & Shao Lin, and purposefully went out of their way to make their mutual thirsting for each other super explicit and in your face.

The inspiration for the song YMCA and The Village People clearly originated in New York gay culture of the late 1970s. It is not explicitly gay because anything explicitly gay was not allowed at the time. The lyrics were intentionally written to have a dual meaning: gay&sexual/straight/celebratory.

Thus, when the song was CULTURALLY APPROPRIATED by major league baseball teams, the gay undertone of the lyrics was invisible to the straight sports audience. YMCA became a well-liked popular song universally enjoyed at weddings, bar mitzvahs, and sporting events. Which is why the trump campaign APPROPRIATED it for trump’s political rallies.

This is also the reason a co-author and MAGA are attempting to STRAIGHTWASH the song by denying its original inspiration and popularity in GAY DISCOS. Just another example of how CULTURAL APPROPRIATION serves the interest of the dominant class by ERASING the CULTURE & HISTORY of minority groups.

I, too, am aware of the irony of realising I never posted about this video essay to tumblr on the same day I find out the news about the UNHINGED decision by netflix to make dorian and basil BROTHERS in their adaptation of the picture of dorian gray - but there you go...

It's not just heterosexual writing, it's aggressively heterosexual writing. It's taking a sexually ambiguous character and assigning heterosexuality to him because they are afraid of the alternatives. It's a subtle retcon that is anything but subtle to queer audiences.

I'm sick of reboots because these people don't know how to handle a character like that with any tact. Spock meant a LOT to a LOT of minorities and it really does just piss me off that gay interpretations get written off as NonsenseTM for no reason that doesn't more or less boil down to good-old-fashioned homophobia. Straight is NOT the default damnit.
