Stormy
One-Shot, following a drabble trio. It's just a funny old-school Avengers Tower fic.
Pairing:Β Bucky Barnes x you (like, normal, but strong, and female - sorry, I tried for gender neutral, but one funny convo threw that out the window)
Word Count:Β 3.6k (Think of it as lots of little drabbles.)
Summary:Β Stormbreaker likes you. Bucky is jealous of a sentient axe. Thor is... spiraling. Hilarity ensues.
Trigger Warnings:Β It's just... humor. Idk. Some pet names, like sweetheart and babe?
Authorβs Note:Β So, you know that moment in Love and Thunder where Stormy looks at Thor when Thor is trying to get Mjolinir to come to him? Yeah, this is all because of that moment.
Drabble 1: You Lifted the Couch?
Drabble 2: You Lifted... Me?
Drabble 3: You Lifted... the Axe?! (Might want to just read this one to know what's going on)

Thor stood in the quiet corner of the Avengers compound where Stormbreaker usually rested. He folded his arms, brow furrowed, staring at the axe like it might apologize first.
It did not.
Stormbreaker leaned, inert, glinting slightly in the sunlight coming through the window. As always, it looked majestic.Β
Thor cleared his throat.
βSo,β he said casually. βShe picks you up once and suddenly youβre best friends.β
Silence.
βShe gave you a nickname,β he added, squinting. βAnd you liked it.β
Still nothing.
He stepped closer, trying not to sound defensive. βLook, I know sheβs strong. And polite. Andβ¦ frankly delightful. But Iβm your wielder. Iβm the god here.β
The axe said nothing.
Thor shifted awkwardly, then reached out a hand to the handle with the air of someone offering a peace branch.
βStormy,β he said gently, with a smile.
The zap hit him instantly.
A bright, crackling snap of electricity arced from the handle into his palm and launched him half a foot backward. He stumbled, caught himself, and blinked as his hand smoked faintly at the fingertips.
He stared.
βYou zapped me?!β
Stormbreaker glinted again.
He looked around as if someone might confirm the betrayal. βThatβ! Youβve never done that! Iβve called you worse things during battle and youβve never shocked me!β
He pointed a dramatic, singed finger at the axe.
βShe calls you Stormy and itβs cute. I call you Stormy and suddenly Iβm unworthy?β
The axe did not respond.
Thor huffed, rubbing his hand. βThis is because I left you on the rug, isnβt it?β
A pause.
A sparkle of static ran up the haft.
Thor glared. βOh, come on.β
From the hallway, Sam peeked in, caught the scene, and just nodded once. βThatβs what you get.β
Thor turned to him, indignant. βIt is my axe!β
Sam raised an eyebrow. βSounds like itβs hers now.β
Stormbreaker shimmered in the light.
Thor stared at it for a long beat, then muttered under his breath, β...traitor.β
*****
It started as a hum.
Not loud, just a low, rhythmic vibration, like the faint thrum of a purring engine, or an oversized feline.
You paused mid-way through your tea, eyes narrowing. The living room was quiet, but the sound was unmistakable. It was coming from the far corner where Stormbreaker sat.
You set your mug down and walked over, tilting your head.
The axe was glowing slightly along the edge of its hilt. Not threatening, just... content. Like a space heater basking in its own warmth.
You crouched beside it, resting one hand gently on the handle. βHey there,β you murmured, thumb brushing across the carved grooves.
The hum grew a little louder, a little deeper.
Your eyes softened.
βOh, you are so sweet,β you cooed. βAre you humming for me?β
The glow pulsed once.
You let your palm slide up the handle in a soothing gesture. βWhatβs got you all happy, huh? Just excited to see me?β
Stormbreaker gave the barest flicker of electricity at the base, like static shiver under your hand. Not shocking, just a response.
Your thumb stopped on a smudge of something, grease maybe, or a fingerprint from a god with snack-hands.
βOh no,β you whispered. βStormy. Youβve got smudges.β
The axe vibrated indignantly.
You gasped. βI know. Iβd be upset too.β
Rising to your feet, you walked over to the hall closet and grabbed a clean microfiber cloth, the good one you usually reserved for your sunglasses. Stormbreaker watched, silently thrilled.
You returned, knelt beside it again, and asked,βHow about I polish you up? Would you like that?β
The humming deepened.
βOkay,β you said softly. βWeβll make you sparkle.β
You worked in slow, loving strokes, running the cloth along the etched metal, tracing around the layered edge of the axehead, down the handle, smoothing every little imperfection with care.
Stormbreaker was practically vibrating now, an almost fond, low warble beneath your fingertips.
βYouβre so handsome when youβre clean,β you whispered, smiling at the shimmer coming back to the surface.
Behind you, someone cleared their throat.
You looked up.
Bucky stood in the doorway, blinking slowly.
His expression was somewhere between concern, confusion, and quiet panic.
β...Are you polishing the murder axe?β he asked.
You beamed. βIt was humming for me.β
He stared at Stormbreaker.
Stormbreaker hummed louder.
He stared at you.
You gently shushed the axe, stroking it once more like a beloved pet.
βI think it likes me,β you said proudly.
Bucky made a noise that sounded like static and a prayer. β...Thorβs gonna lose his mind.β
You looked up from where you were crouched beside Stormbreaker, cloth still in hand.
The axe continued to hum. Bucky furrowed his brows.
βYouβre stillβ¦β he started, then stopped. βYouβre still petting it.β
βIt likes being polished,β you said matter-of-factly. βLook how shiny it is now.β
βItβs a weapon,β he whispered.
You turned the cloth gently along one edge. βAnd weapons deserve love too.β
Stormbreaker pulsed again, practically glowing with smug satisfaction.
Bucky rubbed a hand down his face. βOkay. Fine. Youβre allowed to bond with sentient space metal.β
You glanced up. βBut?β
He hesitated.
You raised a brow. βYouβre not... jealous of the axe, are you?β
He stared at you. Blinked a few times and muttered, β...No?β
You tilted your head. βThat wasnβt convincing.β
He sighed and leaned against the doorframe, folding his arms across his chest.
βI justββ he began, then trailed off. βYou stroke it like itβs a damn cat. Meanwhile, when I try to get your attention, you make me wait for commercial breaks.β
You set the cloth down and stood, dusting your hands. βThatβs not true.β
βYou shushed it,β he added, looking borderline betrayed.
βIt was vibrating too loud!β
βAnd then you said it was handsome!β
βIt is!β you laughed. βBut so are you. You're both shiny and temperamental.β
He blinked again. βIβ¦ wait. Was that supposed to make me feel better?β
You crossed the room, stepping right into his space, and slid your hands around his waist.
Bucky huffed out a laugh, but didnβt move.
You leaned in close. βListen. Youβre the one I cuddle at night. Youβre the one I lift onto counters. The axe just needed a little TLC.β
βIt was purring.β
βAnd I purr for you,β you said, grinning. βYou like when I purr for you.β
He flushed, clearly remembering. βThatβs... beside the point.β
You kissed his cheek. βDo you want to be polished?β
He made a choked sound. βSweetheartββ
You kissed the other cheek. βBecause I could make you shine.β
βYouβre lucky Iβm in love with you,β he muttered.
Behind you, Stormbreaker hummed again, low and smug.
Bucky scowled past your shoulder.
βYouβre not that special,β he said to it.
Stormbreaker sparked once, just a flicker.
You patted Buckyβs chest. βDonβt antagonize the axe, babe.β
*****
Bucky had successfully claimed your lap.
You were curled on the compound couch, legs stretched, his head resting comfortably against your chest while you ran your fingers through his hair. He was completely relaxed, eyes closed, a little smile tugging at his mouth like heβd finally won back your full attention from the weapon with boundary issues.
Until you heard the low insistent hum.Β
Across the room, where it rested neatly in its corner, Stormbreaker faintly pulsed a soft blue. The handle shifted slightly on its own, adjusting its angle like it was⦠watching.
The hum changed in frequency.
Bucky stirred. βWhat was that?β
You hesitated. βI thinkβ¦ Stormyβs humming again.β
He groaned without lifting his head. βOf course it is.β
You gently craned your neck to look again, just in time to see the axe slowly begin to float.
It didnβt zoom, it just quietly glided toward you.
βOh my god,β you whispered. βItβs doing the jealous weapon float.β
Bucky lifted his head and turned, and blinked hard.
βIs itβ¦ is it coming over here?β
The axe hovered in the middle of the room now, still humming, still tilting ever-so-slightly to angle the blade toward Bucky, though not aggressively.Β
Bucky sat up straighter, βItβs looking at me.β
βIt doesnβt have eyes.β
βItβs still looking at me.β
Stormbreaker inched closer.
You stood up instinctively, hands up. βHey. No. Weβve talked about this. You donβt get to threaten my boyfriend.β
The axe slowed, vibrating faintly like a sad puppy.
Bucky was standing too now, several feet back, staring at it. βIβm not fighting a weapon for your affection.β
βNo one is asking you to.β
Stormbreaker hovered midair like a scorned ex.
You sighed, crossed the room, and gently laid your hand on the handle.
The humming stopped.
Stormbreaker leaned into your palm like a cat nudging for attention.
You stroked it once. βWeβre not doing this.β
Bucky watched as you comforted the semi-sentient axe that had tried to intimidate him with glowy vibes and slow-motion judgment.
ββ¦You know what?β he said. βIβm going to bed.β
βJealous again?β
βIβm not competing with an enchanted blade with abandonment issues.β
Stormbreaker purred.
You kissed Buckyβs cheek on the way by. βSheβs just a little possessive.β
βShe?!β Bucky cried, incredulous. He muttered something about "weapon loyalty" and "needing boundaries" as he stomped away.
*****
It was supposed to be a quiet morning.
Youβd made your tea, claimed the sunniest spot in the living room, and now you were back where you often found yourself lately: kneeling in front of Stormbreaker, gently polishing its hilt with your favorite microfiber cloth.
Stormbreaker gave a soft pulsing purr.
βYou like that, huh?β you murmured, carefully working along a smudge near the base. βAll this grime. Honestly. Do you ever get a proper wipe down?β
The axe vibrated in response.
You huffed softly. βI didnβt think so. Look at this build-up. I wonder if it feels itchyβ¦β
Stormbreaker practically preened.
βIs thisβ¦ happening again?β
You turned to see Thor standing just inside the doorway, cape flared slightly, face pulled into a deeply conflicted frown.
βSheβs humming,β he said flatly.
βShe is being appreciated,β you corrected, not even looking up.
βI wield her!β
βYou leave her on the rug.β
βI fought Hela with that axe!β
βAnd then you wiped blood off her edge with your cape.β
Stormbreaker let out a sharp, almost delighted hum.
Thor took a step back like it had betrayed him. βShe likes you.β
βShe likes manners. And maintenance.β You buffed a spot along the blade until it gleamed. βWhich, Iβm just gonna say, is the bare minimum.β
βIβm the God of Thunder.β
βMore like the God of Weapon Neglect,β you muttered.
Stormbreaker hummed louder.
You looked at her with a smile. βSee? She agrees.β
Thor looked between the two of you, your calm, focused polish strokes and Stormbreakerβs literal glowing enthusiasm, then huffed, folding his arms.
βI can clean my own axe.β
βPlease,β you said, still not looking up. βYou put her blade-down into a planter last week.β
βThat was decorative.β
βShe had soil in her rune grooves!β
A sound behind you made you glance over your shoulder.
Bucky stood at the edge of the hall, leaning casually against the doorframe, biting his bottom lip to keep from laughing.
He raised a brow. βDo I need to leave you three alone?β
βIβm just scolding Thor,β Stormbreaker hummed louder.
Bucky grinned. βGod, thatβs hot.β
Thor looked personally victimized. βI have never been more insulted by a mortal.β
You stood up, handed the cloth to Thor, and patted his chest.
βYouβre not being insulted,β you said. βYouβre being taught.β
Stormbreaker vibrated with delight.
*****
Youβd been on your way to the bathroom when Bucky caught your waist and pulled you back in.
His contrasting hands were warm and confident, and cold and unyielding. One slid under your shirt, fingers splaying across your side like he needed to memorize every curve.
βIβve been thinking about this all day,β he murmured, lips brushing just under your ear.
You hummed, smiling. βYeah?β
βYeah.β His voice was already lower, already dipping into that rasp that meant his thoughts were anything but pure.
You turned in his arms and kissed him, slow at first, then deeper when his hands tightened.
One hand slipped under the back of your shirt while the other found your hip. His thumb stroked a soft line just beneath the waistband of your leggings. You gasped into his mouth.
And then⦠you both heard a hum.
Bucky froze.
You pulled back slightly. β...Was that you?β
βNo.β
Hummmmm.
This time it was louder.Β
You both turned slowly toward the corner of the room.
Stormbreaker hovered mid-air, gently tilting toward you.
Bucky blinked. βWhy is it in here?β
βI didnβt bring herββ
Hum.
The axe floated an inch closer.
βOh my god,β Bucky muttered. βShe followed you?β
βI think sheβs lonely.β
βSheβs a weapon.β
βSheβs sensitive.β
Bucky straightened, exasperated. βThis is our time.β
Stormbreaker glowed faintly in response. Her hum was sad, almost mournful.
You sighed. βSheβs pouting.β
βSheβs interrupting!β
Stormbreaker tilted slightly, like she was trying to cut between you.
Bucky stepped in front of you instinctively. βAbsolutely not. No third wheels. Especially glowing ones.β
Stormbreaker let out a low, grumbly warble.
βShe just misses me,β you whispered.
Bucky looked torn between rage and betrayal. βI missed you. I didnβt levitate into the bedroom to prove a point.β
You held up your hand gently, palm out. βStormy. I love you. But not right now, okay?β
The axe stilled.
Then slowly floated backward, settling in the hallway just outside the door like an obedient, but sulky, guard dog.
You closed the door and locked it for good measure.
Bucky stared at you. βIs this our life now?β
βSheβs just a little emotionally dependent.β You kissed him again. βNow. Where were we?β
He hesitated. β...Youβre sure sheβs not going to burst in again?β
βShe respects boundaries,β you promised.Β
*****
Bucky stared into his coffee like it had betrayed him.
Next to him, Thor was sulking with the theatrical weight of a man whoβd once been worshipped and now couldnβt even get his axe to come when called.
βI donβt understand,β Thor muttered. βShe used to glow for me.β
Bucky didnβt look up. βYeah? Well, she used to polish me.β
Thor blinked slowly. β...We are talking about the same βshe,β yes?β
Bucky gave him a look. βMy girlfriend. Your axe.β
βAh.β Thor sighed. βYes. Of course. My apologies. Itβs been a confusing week.β
They sat in silence. Somewhere in the compound, Stormbreaker was probably curled up beside you like a sleepy guard cat, humming every time you brushed your hand over her handle.
Bucky scowled.
βSheβs obsessed,β he muttered.
βShe called her βStormyβ and she liked it,β Thor said bitterly.
βShe spends more time oiling your axe than she does kissing me.β
Thor turned. βShe oils her?β
βLike a spa treatment,β Bucky gritted out.
Stormbreaker hadnβt even tried to hide it earlier, hovering three feet behind you while you made lunch, humming softly every time your hand got close. Bucky had tried to pull you into a kiss and got gently headbutted by the flat side of the axe.
Thor huffed. βShe used to answer only to me.β
βShe snuck into my bed in the middle of the night,β Bucky muttered.
Another beat of silence.
Thor looked over. βYour girlfriend, orβ?β
βThe axe, Thor.β
βOh.β
They both stared at the wall.
Finally, Thor folded his arms. βWe must do something.β
βI know,β Bucky snapped. βYou think I like competing with your clingy flying weapon?β
βAnd you think I enjoy watching your girlfriend cradle Stormbreaker like a sacred relic while I stand in the corner like a useless thunder jock?β
Bucky sighed, dragging a hand through his hair. βAlright. Fine. We fix this.β
Thor leaned forward. βA plan.β
βA mission.β
βOperation: Win Her Back.β
Bucky nodded. βExactly.β
Another pause.
ββ¦Do we know how?β Thor asked.
βAbsolutely not.β
They both slumped.
In the hallway, a faint hum echoed.
Bucky glared toward the sound. βI swear to god, if that axe is cuddling her again, Iβm filing a restraining order.β
Thor sighed. βShe never hums for me anymore.β
Bucky knocked back the last of his coffee.
βWelcome to the club.β
*****
Theyβd said it was training
βJust a little warm-up,β Bucky had mumbled.Β
βNothing formal,β Thor had insisted.
You sat on a bench, sipping your iced coffee, completely unconvinced.
Stormbreaker floated behind you like a judgmental bodyguard.
Thor made the first move. A flashy spin of Mjolinir which launched him into a gravity-defying leap, landing in a dramatic crouch that sent a wave of dust into the air.
You clapped politely. βNice landing.β
Stormbreaker buzzed once, unimpressed.
Thor frowned at the axe. βI am still mighty,β he muttered.
Bucky was up next. He looked good, sweaty, focused, a little smug. He made eye contact with you before flipping his knife once and launching it across the field, dead center into the bullseye target.
You arched a brow. βNot bad, soldier.β
He smirked.
Stormbreaker hummed a little louder. It was unclear whether she was annoyed or simply claiming your attention by proximity.
Thor squared his shoulders. βI once decapitated a frost giant from seventy feet away.β
Bucky didnβt miss a beat. βI did cardio this morning without complaining.β
Thor scoffed. βI bench press tanks.β
βI cleaned the bathroom.β
You hid a laugh behind your cup. βAre you two competing or courting?β
βYes,β they both said at once.
Stormbreaker let out a metallic shnnk sound, like steel dragging across a whetstone. Definitely judgmental.
Bucky waved a hand at the axe. βWhat is her problem?β
You grinned. βShe doesnβt appreciate posturing.β
Thor straightened. βShe used to love my posturing.β
βShe loves attention,β Bucky muttered, crossing his arms.Β
βYouβre adorable,β you said. βIn a sad insecure way.β
Bucky narrowed his eyes. βYou think Iβm insecure?β
βI think youβre trying very hard to win my affection when you already have it.β
That stopped him.
You stepped up to him, brushing a hand over his arm, then stood on your toes to press a kiss to his cheek. βYou donβt have to impress me, Buck. You just have to keep being you.β
Thor cleared his throat. βAnd what about me?β
You turned to him, patted his armored chest once. βYouβre a good friend.β
Stormbreaker hummed like it was laughing.
Thor winced. βShe used to think me worthy.β
βShe still might,β you said gently. βBut youβve got to earn it with more than flashy spins.β
Stormbreaker tilted slightly toward you.
Bucky leaned down and whispered in your ear, βIβm still your favorite, right?β
You didnβt answer out loud. Just gave his dog tags a gentle tug and pulled him in for a kiss that left no doubt.
Stormbreaker purred.
Thor groaned and turned away.
βFine. I shall spar with Steve. At least he doesnβt flirt with my axe.β
From behind you, Stormbreaker hummed a smug, vibrating chord.
*****
You hadnβt planned to be a mediator today. Honestly, youβd just wanted to enjoy your smoothie and maybe sneak in a few kisses with Bucky before team training kicked off.
But the axe was humming again., Thor was pouting, and Bucky was sulking in the corner.
You set your drink down and clapped your hands together.
βOkay. Everyone. Sit.β
Thor paused mid-huff. βIββ
βSit, Thor.β
Stormbreaker gently hovered into place beside the coffee table, humming softly as if to say thank you for including me. Thor flopped onto the couch. Bucky dropped into the armchair with a sigh. You remained standing, arms crossed, trying to figure out how your life had come to this.
βRight,β you said. βWeβre going to have a conversation now. All of us.β
Stormbreaker glowed faintly in agreement.
βThis is either the start of a really bad joke,β Bucky muttered, βor a group therapy session I did not consent to.β
βI mean,β you said, βitβs both.β
Thor cleared his throat. βI merely wish to state, for the record, that I have no issue with the mortal woman. I simply wish for Stormbreaker to remember her rightful wielder.β
Stormbreakerβs hum dropped half a tone. You didnβt speak axe, but you were pretty sure that was βdonβt test me, thunder boy.β
You held up a hand. βThor, youβve been neglectful.β
βI have not!β
βShe had gravy on her rune edge last week.β
Thor blinked. β...I didnβt notice.β
Stormbreaker spun slowly in the air, dramatic and disappointed.
βAndΒ you,β you turned to Bucky, βhave been acting like a man in a love triangle with a hair straightener.β
βShe purrs when you pet her.β
βYouΒ purr when I pet you.β
He blinked. β...Thatβs not the same.β
βI just think,β you said, exasperated, βthat we need some ground rules.β
Thor and Bucky exchanged a look.
Stormbreaker hummed expectantly.
βRule one,β you said, pointing at the axe, βStormy doesnβt float into the bedroom after lights out. ThatβsΒ myΒ time.β
Bucky smirked, smug again. βHell yeah it is.β
βRule two,β you added, βThor actually cleans her once in a while.β
Thor nodded solemnly. βI shall schedule regular oiling. And gentle compliments.β
Stormbreaker pulsed, satisfied.
βRule three,β you continued, βBucky stops treating her like the other woman.β
He pouted. βShe started it.β
βSheβs two hundred pounds of star metal and feelings.β
βIβve been replaced,β he said under his breath.
You walked over and dropped into his lap.
βHave you?β you asked, tilting your head.
He looked up at you, those soft blue eyes still clinging to a bit of wounded pride, and finally shook his head. βNo. But I miss being the one who makes you laugh with no magic or humming involved.β
You smiled. βThen maybe stop glaring at the axe like she stole your seat at dinner.β
Bucky glanced at Stormbreaker. She buzzed innocently.
He sighed and leaned his head against your shoulder. βFine. Truce.β
Stormbreaker floated an inch closer and gently bumped the side of the couch.
You sighed, reaching out to pat her haft. βOkay, fine. Group hug.β
βAbsolutely not,β Bucky grumbled, but didnβt move when you brushed your fingers through his hair and wrapped one arm around him and held out the other for the axe.
Thor placed one enormous hand over Stormbreakerβs handle and whispered, βWelcome home, sweet girl.β
Stormbreaker hummed.
Thor beamed.
Bucky rolled his eyes.
