ooh, 7 e/R for the spotify wrapped meme? :)
7. "YoĂź and I" by Lady Gaga.
E/R, modern AU.
Even though it had been two years since heâd last set foot in the Musain, the familiar jingle of the bell when Enjolras opened the door still sounded like coming home. He had barely taken two steps into the bar when he heard a low whistle as familiar as the bell above the door, and it also felt a lot like coming home. âBatten down the hatches, boys,â Grantaire crowed with a grin, even though at 2 in the afternoon, there were only a handful of people to even hear him. âTrouble done just walked back into my life.â
Enjolras just shook his head, though he couldnât stop his own grin from spreading across his face as Grantaire stepped out from around the bar. âIâll take it Bossuet made you watch Sweet Home Alabama again recently?â
Grantaire scowled. âExcuse me, âmadeâ me?â he asked, mock-insulted, even as he pulled Enjolras into a hug and gave him a friendly kiss on the cheek. âI resent the implication that I am not capable of deciding to watch Reese Witherspoonâs best film all on my own.â
âI think most critics and Reese herself might disagree with that assessment,â Enjolras said mildly.
âThey can have their incorrect opinion,â Grantaire said with a shrug. He gestured toward the bar. âTake a seat, Iâll bring your usual.â
Enjolras headed obediently toward the bar, sitting down on a bar stool as he remarked, âI wasnât aware I had a usual.â
Grantaire just winked at him, and Enjolrasâs stomach gave a traitorous little flip-flop. He watched, intrigued, as Grantaire bustled with something on the back of the bar before turning around to present a steaming mug with a flourish. âIrish coffee, hold the Irish.â
Enjolras laughed lightly. âDid youââ
âPut in enough sugar to give a bull elephant diabetes?â Grantaire finished, grinning as he leaned against the bar. âOf course. You know I know how you like it.â
Enjolras did know, just as he still knew Grantaireâs coffee order, and how he liked his pillows arranged on his bed, and the hundreds of other little details heâd learned from when they were together, the hundreds of other little details he would never forget, no matter how long theyâd been apart.
He took a sip of coffee, closing his eyes as he savored the taste. When he opened them, Grantaire was still grinning at him, but something had softened in his expression. âWhat?â Enjolras asked, and Grantaire just shook his head.
âNothing,â he said. âJust missed your face, thatâs all.â
âBut not the rest of me?â Enjolras teased, mostly to hide the way his heart leapt at the words.
Grantaire laughed. âNah, I can do without most of the rest.â
Enjolras cradled the coffee mug between both of his hands. âSo do you have a break anytime soon? I hate to monopolize you while youâre working.â
âBullshit,â Grantaire said good-naturedly. âYou love nothing more than work disruptions.â Still he crossed over to where the few other patrons were finishing their drinks. âGive us a few minutes, would you?â he said. âNext roundâs on me for the inconvenience.â
There was only mild grumbling as they stood and filed out, and Grantaire rolled his eyes, but with affection. âPerks of being a neighborhood bar,â he said, coming out from around the bar and crossing to the door to lock it before sliding onto the bar stool next to Enjolras. âAnd now you can monopolize me as you feel fit.â
Despite this being the exact reason why heâd came, Enjolras felt suddenly strangely tongue-tied. âSo Courfeyrac told me you bought the place,â he said finally.
Grantaire shrugged, looking slightly uncomfortable. âYeah, well, you know. When Madame Houcheloup decided to sell, I figured, fuck it.â
Enjolras nodded slowly. âThe basis of all good business decisions.â
âLike you would know,â Grantaire shot back.
It was exactly like old times, exactly as if Enjolras had never left two years ago. âTouchĂŠ.â
Almost as if he sensed Enjolras thoughts, Grantaire looked away and cleared his throat before continuing, âBut in any case, there was no way I could let her sell this place.â
âToo many memories,â Enjolras said softly.
âYeah,â Grantaire said. âLike the time I took your virginity on that couch.â
Enjolras choked on his sip of coffee. âThat is emphatically not what happened,â he spluttered with a laugh.
Grantaire grinned. âCâmon. We all know that what happened with you and Combeferre when you were both 16 doesnât count.â
Enjolras rolled his eyes good-naturedly. âYouâre using a very loose interpretation of âwe allâ.â
Grantaire just shrugged blithely. âMaybe so.â
It was Enjolrasâs turn to clear his throat, to steer things away from touching too closely on what theyâd had â what theyâd been. âWell the bar looks great,â he said, surprised to find he meant it. âStill feels like home.â He hesitated. âDare I ask what you did with our meeting room?â
Grantaire brightened. âOh, thatâs the best part,â he said, hopping off his bar stool. âCâmon, Iâll show you.â
He held his hand out to Enjolras, who took it, letting Grantaire lead him to the back room, treading the same familiar path theyâd walked hundreds of times before.
But the back room looked nothing like the dingy space theyâd used, which had the main benefit of being free as long as they bought drinks and kept the noise mostly down. Now, it was bright and airy, with a small stage along one wall, books and art supplies along another, and even a few computers set up in the corner.
âTurned it into a community meeting center,â Grantaire told him as Enjolras looked around, impressed. âThereâs a little library with all kinds of anti-racist and pro-trans propaganda. Jehan leads a poetry workshop twice a month, and Feuilly has a weekly art class that he teaches.â He shrugged as if it was nothing. âAnd of course we do a monthly drag reading hour for the kids.â
Enjolras nodded approvingly. âAny threats?â
Grantaire shrugged again. âYeah but you know Bahorel thrives on that shit,â he said brightly. âLast time he did a TikTok basically daring the proud boys to show up.â
âOf course he did,â Enjolras said with a laugh.
Grantaire grinned. âThankfully they didnât, and Cosette had a really great story time.â
Enjolras frowned slightly. âCosette?â
âShe wanted to try being a drag king.â
Enjolras considered that mental image for a moment. âHowâd that go?â
Grantaire laughed. âShe loved it. MariusâŚI mean, he mightâve started the evening as a 0 on the Kinsey Scale but he definitely did not end that way.â
He sounded almost gleeful and Enjolras could only imagine. Still, he couldnât help but counter. âPlease. Marius lived with Courfeyrac for like 3 years. Thereâs no way he was ever a 0 on the Kinsey Scale.â
Grantaire barked a laugh. âYeah, youâre probably not wrong.â
âWell this is really incredible,â Enjolras told Grantaire, sincerity in every word. âYouâve done amazing work.â
Grantaire waved him off, gesturing for them to head back to the bar. âThanks,â he said, a little gruffly. âAnd we, uh, we might be expanding.â
âReally?â
Grantaire nodded as they sat back down at the bar. âRumor has it Mabeuf is thinking of selling the Corinthe.â His grin turned sly. âWe had some good memories there too, remember?â
âHow could I possibly forget?â Enjolras said dryly. âThat time where we got arrested?â
Grantaireâs grin widened. âOh, I was actually thinking of that other time that we got arrested. Or maybe, uhââ
âThat time?â Enjolras supplied, grinning as well.
âWhen we got arrested?â Grantaire said, and they both laughed.
Enjolras shook his head. âOur ill-spent youth.â
Grantaireâs smile slipped just slightly. âI donât know,â he said quietly. âIt doesnât seem all that ill-spent looking back on it.â Enjolras didnât know what to say, and stared down into his mug of coffee until Grantaire added, âAnd I definitely donât think we were all that young either.â
Enjolras laughed again and Grantaire smiled at him before saying, in an attempt at casual, âAll that said, I doubt you came all this way just to take a look at the bar.â He arched an eyebrow at Enjolras. âSo why are you here?â
âFor starters, you still make a killer cup of coffee,â Enjolras said, lifting his mug in a mock-toast. Grantaireâs expression didnât change, and he sighed. âTruth be told, Iâve been thinking about us recently.â
Grantaireâs expression tightened. âEnjââ
âYou let me go when I needed to figure out what I really wanted to do with my life,â Enjolras said, hoping it didnât sound rehearsed, even if he had gone over this twenty times in his head and twice with Combeferre before finally coming over. âAnd Iâm not pretending that we can just jump back in, but I want us to try.â
Grantaire shook his head slowly. âEnjolras, when you leftââ He broke off with a sigh. âWe left things between us on the best possible note. Why would you want to ruin that now?â
âI didnât come here to ruin anything,â Enjolras said quietly.
âThen maybe itâs time to let things go,â Grantaire said with a sigh. âWhat you and I hadââ His tone turned wistful. âIâm not gonna pretend like I donât miss it, but itâs not as simple as you walking back into this bar and us trying again. Itâs been two years. Weâre both different people now.â
âMaybe,â Enjolras said. âBut in my case at least, different means better. And I want the chance to prove that to you.â Grantaire was silent and Enjolras hesitated before adding, âI know what mistakes I made last time, and I know you have no reason to believe me, but Iâm not going to make the same mistakes this time.â
Grantaire sighed again and shook his head slowly. âI do believe you,â he said softly. âIâve always believed in you. But itâs not so simpleââ
âIt is,â Enjolras interrupted. âThis time it is.â
âEnjââ
âThe mistake that I made last time was leaving without you,â Enjolras told him. âAnd Iâm definitely not making that mistake every again.â
Grantaire snorted but didnât quite meet his eyes as he said, âThen youâre gonna be here an awfully long time.â
Despite himself, Enjolras smiled, just slightly. âYeah,â he agreed. âThatâs kind of the point.â
Something in his tone seemed to take Grantaire aback, and he frowned. âWhat do you mean?â
Enjolras met his eyes squarely. âI mean what I said. Iâm not leaving without you this time.â
Abruptly, Grantaire stood, making his way behind the bar and grabbing a rag like he was going to start cleaning, though he just twisted it between his hands as if he needed something to do with them. âEnjolras, as romantic as it may be in the movies to swoop back in someplace and whisk some guy you used to fuck away to the big city with you, realityâs a little different.â Enjolras started to interrupt, but Grantaire didnât let him. âI own this place, and I know itâs not the amazing living youâve made for yourself, but itâs mine and I love it. Iâm not just going to pack up and leave because you came back andâ and smiled at me.â
He obviously hadnât meant to end on that note, and despite everything, Enjolras couldnât help but laugh a little. âSmiled at you?â he repeated.
Grantaire jerked a shrug. âWhat can I say, Iâm still a weak man,â he said.
Enjolras nodded slowly. âA weak man without great comprehension skills to boot.â
Grantaire scowled. âWhatââ
âI know youâre not going anywhere,â Enjolras told him. âI know youâve made a life for yourself.â Grantaire still looked confused, and Enjolras reached out for his hand, his heart beating double-time when Grantaire let him take it. âIâm not asking you to come away with me. Iâm asking to be a part of it.â
For a moment, Grantaire still looked confused, but then realization dawned on Grantaireâs face. âThis time youâre not leaving without me.â
Enjolras nodded. âExactly.â
A slow grin started to spread across Grantaireâs face before it faltered. âBut what about your life in the city?â
Enjolras shrugged. âIt wasnât what I wanted,â he said simply. âBesides, thereâs so much organizing work that needs to be done in the suburbs, exurbs and rural areas ahead of 2024, andââ
âAnd Iâm sure youâll tell me all about it,â Grantaire interrupted, but his smile was gentle as he raised their clasped hands to his lips, pressing a kiss to Enjolrasâs knuckles. âSo youâre really back.â
âYeah,â Enjolras said softly. âYeah, Iâm home.â
Now Grantaireâs smile was blinding, and Enjolras let himself grin as well, leaning in to close the space between them, to finally do what heâd wanted to do ever since he saw Grantaire again, toâ
Someone pounded on the door and Grantaire groaned. âClearly our 15 minutes are up,â he said, but he was still grinning.
âCapitalism once again ruins everything,â Enjolras told him, and Grantaire laughed as he stood.
âWell,â he said, reaching out to cup Enjolrasâs cheek, âmaybe not everything.â
He kissed the top of Enjolrasâs head and went to unlock the door. Enjolras stood, figuring he should probably leave, but Grantaire frowned at him as he returned to the bar. âWhere do you think youâre going?â
âI was justââ
âSit your ass back down,â Grantaire whispered. âMusichettaâs shift starts at 5, and then youâre gonna take me to dinner.âÂ
Enjolras hesitated. He had a million and one things that he needed to do, andâ âEnjolras,â Grantaire said quietly. âYou said you werenât going to make the same mistakes.â
âAnd Iâm not,â Enjolras promised. He drained his mug of coffee. âAnd in that case, Iâll have another.â
Grantaire grinned again. âYour usual, coming right up,â he said.
Enjolras grinned as well as he watched Grantaire pouring him another cup of coffee. They still had a lot to talk about, but Enjolras was a man of his word, and heâd never anything more than what heâd promised Grantaire.
This time, he wasnât leaving without him.
