Reposted from @abbas_mvungi Breaks my heart to find out that some countries are gathering in Zimbabwe trying to bring back the international commercial trade in ivory which has been banned for years. The three-day conference started on Monday attended by Representatives from Japan, China and other 16 African countries. Last week envoys from some European Union countries, Britain, the United States and Canada were guided through heavily guarded vaults in Harare that are filled with piles of elephant tusks, as one of many silly movements of Zimbabwe to try to win international support for legal sales of its stockpile of seized ivory. I am writing this post with a broken heart because the reopening of legal international trade in ivory trade, even for a single auction, would result in a massacre for the last African Giants, the elephants. The theory of Demand and Supply doesn’t work for ivory trade, In 1997 and 2008 , CITES, the UN agreement that bans the trade of endangered species, allowed a one-off sale of Ivory stocks from Namibia, Zimbabwe, Botswana and South Africa to Japan and China with expectations to cut elephant poaching by reducing supply of illegal ivory to the market. This ridiculous act catastrophically backfired and poaching went up quickly from very few elephants being poached each year to about 33,000 a year at the peak around 2011.
