saw a video today of someone playing a reconstruction of the neanderthal-made probable cave bear bone flute in the same cave where it was found, and I had to pause the video and ruminate imagine. it's been something like 55,000 years since that flute made sound in that cave. 55 millenia since an extinct tree of humanity bored holes into a bone and made music in those same stone halls. and now in the impossibly distant future from that point, those sounds can be heard again, played by a different form of human, their cousins; trying to learn what they were like. makes me want to go get a bowl of ochre and a pitch torch and paint a handprint in a cave somewhere, just to do it. maybe the stones will remember.
