Way back when... I wonder a lot about teenager WWX, and him being an eternal troublemaker...  it could be simple teenage rebellion and disregard for authority (i.e. originally Mrs Yu?). The fact that he could be mischievous and joyful despite his tragic backstory, I took initially as a sign of him being well loved and secure in his family’s affections. But in retrospect, I think it’s more than that. It is also a way to stay in his designated role as JC’s second fiddle while protecting his pride. He may be smarter and stronger and a better cultivator than JC but his ‘unreliability’ makes him unsuited for the position of sect leader. This role allows him to express his true ability (preserving the legacy of his mum, and as a reply to those ‘servant’s son’ comments) while maintaining the status quo.
