Chapter 2
The sky was burning. That was the last thing Y/N remembered. Smoke filled the air so thick it felt like breathing through cloth. The city around her had already collapsed into rubble hours ago. Buildings torn open, streets cracked apart, cars flipped over like toys. The sound was the worst part. Not the explosions. Not even the gunfire. The screaming.
“LEFT SIDE!” someone shouted through the comms. “They’re climbing the wall!”
Y/N turned and fired without even thinking. The rifle kicked hard into her shoulder. One of the creatures dropped, but two more were already climbing over it. Her lungs burned. She had been fighting for hours. Maybe longer. Time didn't mean much anymore during the war.
“Commander! Do you copy?” someone yelled into the radio. Nothing but static came back.
“Of course,” Y/N muttered under her breath. “Fantastic timing.”
She checked the rifle quickly. Six rounds. Not great odds. A soldier beside her screamed suddenly as something dragged him straight off the ground. One second he was there, the next he was gone. Y/N grabbed the grenade from her belt.
“Fall back!” someone shouted somewhere behind her.
Too late for that. The creature lunged toward her. There was a bright flash. Then nothing.
The quiet was wrong. That was the first thing she noticed. No explosions. No shouting. No rumbling from the sky. No gunfire echoes across broken buildings. Just silence. Y/N’s eyes snapped open. For a few seconds, she didn’t move at all. Training kicked in before her thoughts did. Scan first. Her eyes moved slowly across the room. Wood ceiling. Curtains. A dresser. Her brain struggled to catch up. This wasn’t a military base. This wasn’t the battlefield. Her hand shook slightly against the blanket. A blanket. A normal blanket.
“…what?”
Her voice sounded rough, like she hadn’t used it in a long time. She slowly sat up in bed. The room looked… old. Not destroyed old. Just… old-fashioned. Heavy wooden furniture, thick curtains, and a patterned rug on the floor. Looked like she travelled 100 years back… It looked like something from a history book.
“This… doesn’t make sense.”
She swung her legs off the side of the bed. Her feet touched the floor, and she paused there, trying to figure out where she was. Then she heard footsteps outside the door. Immediately, every muscle in her body tensed. Her head snapped toward the door. The footsteps were calm. Slow. Still dangerous. The door opened. An older man stepped inside. Grey hair. Clean suit like from the 2030’s, but no one wears suits anymore, shirts are formal enough.
“Ah,” the man said calmly. “You are awake.”
Y/N moved instantly. She jumped off the bed and backed away fast until her shoulder touched the wall. Her hands were already raised, ready to fight if she had to.
“Stop right there.”
The man froze immediately. He looked surprised but not frightened. “Miss Y/N,” he said carefully, “there is no need for alarm-”
Y/N was already moving again. She crossed the room quickly and grabbed the curtain, pulling it shut over the window. The sunlight disappeared and the room dimmed.
“You shouldn’t leave windows open like that,” she said quietly, almost scolding. “Movement gets noticed.”
The man blinked. “I beg your pardon?”
She turned back toward him, watching him carefully. “You walked straight into the room without checking anything,” she said. “And you stood in the doorway like a target. That’s not good training.”
The man looked confused now. “I… see.”
Her eyes narrowed. “What rank are you?”
He hesitated. “…Rank?”
“Yes. Rank.”
The man straightened slightly. “My name is Alfred Pennyworth.” She stared at him.
“That’s a name.”
“Yes.”
“That’s not a rank. God, who in the world gave you the training? The Flow Rid 2 batch?”
“Miss… are you okay?.”
She rubbed her forehead slowly. “Are you military?”
“I am… a butler.”
Y/N blinked. “A what?”
“A butler.”
She stared at him like maybe she misheard. “You’re not a soldier.”
“No.”
She exhaled slowly. “Okay. That’s… strange. What are you from the 2030’s?”
Her eyes moved around the room again. That was when she noticed the mirror. Her gaze landed on it and she froze. A girl stared back at her But something felt wrong. Y/N slowly stepped closer. The reflection moved with her. She studied it carefully. The face was younger. Much younger. No scars. Her stomach twisted. She lifted her hand slowly. The reflection lifted its hand.
Y/N jumped back suddenly. “What—”
Alfred stepped forward slightly, concerned. “Miss Y/N?”
She was staring at the mirror like it was some kind of trick. “That’s not right.”
“That is… a mirror.”
“I know what a mirror is.”
Her voice was quieter now. Confused. She walked closer again, slower this time. The girl in the mirror looked like a teen.. Y/N touched her own face carefully. The reflection copied her. “…how old am I?”
Alfred blinked. “You are 16, Miss Y/N.”
Her heart dropped. That didn’t make sense. She looked down at her hands. No scars. Her voice was quieter now. “What year is it?”
“2025.”
She shook her head immediately. “No. Did you hit your head on a wall?” Alfred frowned slightly.
“I assure you-”
“That’s not possible.” She turned away from the mirror and sat on the edge of the bed again, trying to think.
That meant the war hadn’t happened yet. The aliens hadn’t arrived yet. Everything she had lived through… hadn’t happened yet. SHE IS MORE THAN 100 YEARS BACK!!! Her mind spun.
After a minute she looked up at Alfred again. He was watching her carefully now. Concern clear on his face. “Miss Y/N… are you feeling unwell?”
She ignored that question. “Where is this place?”
“This is Wayne Manor.”
She frowned. “…where is that.”
Alfred blinked again. “Gotham City.”
She stared at him blankly. “…I don’t know where that is.”
That actually surprised him. “You… live here.”
“I don’t remember it.”
He looked genuinely concerned now. “Miss Y/N, perhaps you should lie down—”
“No.” She shook her head. “I need information.” She rubbed her temples slowly. “I studied history. Ancient history mostly. That was easier… older things make more sense. But Gotham… I don’t remember that place.” Alfred watched her carefully.
“You truly do not remember where you are.”
“No.” She said, “I was just fighting whipsicks at the Japan Gap Wall… they were climbing the wall… The aliens were invading the last city… Do you even know what a whipsick is?”
“Miss, I believe you are feeling sick, and yet to realize.”
“NO!”
“And you believe you were… fighting in a war.”
“Yes.”
“With… aliens.”
“Yes.”
Alfred was quiet for a moment. “…that is a rather unusual claim.”
“I know.” Her voice wasn’t panicked now. Just confused.
“I remember the battlefield clearly. The noise. The creatures. The war. Then a flash of light.” She looked down at her hands again. “And now I’m here.” Alfred folded his hands in front of him.
“I see.” He clearly didn’t understand. But he wasn’t dismissing her either. That helped a little. Y/N looked back at the mirror again. The younger version of her stared back.
“…this is weird,” she said quietly.
Alfred nodded slightly. “Yes… I imagine it is.”
