Certo i giorni migliori sono i primi, i giorni in cui ancora si conoscono poco. Quando si conoscono bene, tutto è più difficile, perché è difficile amare chi si conosce bene. Amare è essere curiosi. E’ bello solo ciò di cui non siamo ancora sazi. Forse solo ciò che è nuovo è bello. Ad ogni modo è solo ciò che è nuovo che possiamo amare. Per amare una persona che conosciamo bene è necessario prima dimenticarla, non del tutto, ma in buona parte.
Questo è quanto imparano in quei quattordici giorni. Nessuno dei due dice all’altro di averlo imparato. Sono prudenti, cioè bugiardi. Per amare qualcuno a lungo bisogna mentire, molto a se stessi, e più ancora alla persona amata. Una forma di menzogna è diventare raffinati. E presto lo diventano. Si danno nomi nuovi, trovano nuovi posti per baciarsi, nuovi posti per dormire. Per un po’ è divertente, ma non può nascondere a lungo la verità . Allora trovano altri modi per mascherarla. Uno dei modi per prolungare l’amore è mischiarlo con l’odio. E’ il modo migliore, ma in un certo senso il più pericoloso.
