Medical report proves I was punched in bust-up, says Ukip leadership hopeful

The Ukip MEP in hospital after a bust-up with a party colleague has insisted his injuries support his claim that he was attacked. Leadership hopeful Steven Woolfe said a medical examination revealed he suffered injuries to his face, head and body. The 49-year-old's spokesman said: "A team of experts independent of the hospital staff were called in to examine physical injuries to Steven's face, head and body that were inconsistent with just a seizure or a fall as a result of a seizure. Their report will shine a different light on claims currently being made in the media."

The team of experts also examined other pieces of evidence including clothing and images relating to those injuries.

Barrister Mr Woolfe was taken to hospital on Thursday following an altercation with another MEP, Mike Hookem, in the European parliament building in Strasbourg. He claims that he was punched by the MEP for Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire MEP and knocked his head as he fell. However, Mr Hookem has denied throwing a punch and said it was no more than "handbags at dawn". After Mr Woolfe issued his report, a spokesman for Mr Hookem said the 62-year-old was standing by his version of events. "Mr Hookem will now be seeking legal advice in relation to Mr Woolfe's allegations and will be making no further comment at this time," he added.
