The first time Stiles laid eyes on the kings of the Nemeton Kingdom was a few weeks after he had first presented. He’d never forget the way they looked, next to each other on their thrones. King Derek was only a couple years older than Stiles, but with his cheeks dusted in a short beard, eyes sharp, he was the real picture of a king and an alpha. An Alpha too; a werewolf and leader of his pack. He was a lot. In a good way. And then Stiles saw King Peter, much older than Stiles, but as handsome and gorgeous as Derek, with piercing blue eyes, a goatee and an utterly charming smile. Stiles had never seen two alphas like them, radiating power and control so effortlessly.
Being freshly presented, he’d not been good at regulating the signals he gave off yet. His instinctual reaction to two incredibly alpha alphas like that had drawn the attention of some random entitled alpha who got horny over the scent of aroused omega. Only that Stiles had absolutely not been interested in the guy and told him as much in very uncertain terms.
Alas, ever since, this became a recurring problem. Stiles’ dad was influential enough, a lord ruling over a sizable county within the kingdom. Add to that the fact that male omegas were rare and Stiles had a line of interested suitors who had no interest in him as a person. No, to them omegas were best seen not heard, pretty little trophies to adorn their alpha’s arms. It got tired real quick.
The breaking point for Stiles came a nearly a year later. And maybe his temper was particularly testy because King Derek was visiting Beacon Hills. Stiles had seen the kings a handful of times in the months prior. His father, as a former high-ranking general with years of knowledge, was advising the kings on the war against the neighboring kingdom under King Gerard and Stiles had managed to sneak into some of those meetings, even got to give input to his dad, who passed it along. Every time the kings listened to advise that technically came from Stiles, Stiles preened.
Both Derek and Peter were not just nice to look at, powerful and intelligent, they had also praised his work – even if they didn’t know it was his – and on the rare occasions that they interacted with him, they’d always treated him with respect, which was sadly more than he could say about many of his supposed suitors. So he developed a crush. It was stupid and probably also kind of pathetic, definitely unrealistic, considering they were not just a happily mated pair but also the actual kings of their kingdom. Still, Derek’s visit made him feel all eager and excited. So when Kira informed him about yet another suitor, he was a little more agitated than normal. The omega inside didn’t want his desired alpha to overhear that other alphas were interested in him.
“I’m done,” Stiles announced irritated, in the middle of the hallway where Kira had found him. “No more suitors. No more courting gifts from lords at the edge of the kingdom and alphas who want me in their bed or hanging off their arms like a prized possession.”
He stormed off, angry and frustrated by all of this. Kira found him not long after, looking concerned as she sat down next to him on his bed. With a glower, he buried his face in his pillow. She reached out to pat his head, carding her fingers through his hair. The other omega’s presence calmed him a little. She’d been his attendant ever since he had presented as an omega and quickly became his best friend, as eager to learn and kind of chaotic – but in a much more charming manner than Stiles.
“You serious about it?” Kira asked softly.
“Yeah,” Stiles huffed. “It’s been like eight months of constant courting requests by alphas who either leer at me, or just think that I am an easy in with my dad. I’m tired. I’m just really tired.”
“And it has nothing to do with the king currently visiting?”
“A—absolutely not,” Stiles shot her a glare. “I’m not stupid, Kira. I know he’s the king and I’m just some kid of a lord not high born enough to even register. Never mind that he’s happily mated. No, this is not related to the king, I’m just tired of the song and dance that leads nowhere. If I meet a nice alpha who actually knows how to behave like a decent person? I’ll make an exception.”
But he wasn’t optimistic for it. Sighing, he rolled over and stared at the ceiling. He was done.
