Steve stands up, and thatās where it all goes wrong.
His intent was to grab more drinks from the fridge, but when he stood, he blinked a few times. āWhoa,ā he murmurs.
āSteve?ā Robin asks. She sounds like sheās at the end of a long tunnel.
āSteve?ā Eddie asks. He sounds closer, but not as close as he should.
āāM fine,ā he says, ājusā dizzy.ā
Then heās waking up in the hospital. āWhat,ā he asks, then doesnāt complete the thought because Robin and Eddie are both standing over him, one on each side, holding each of his hands, and heād feel so much love if he could feel anything besides general panic because- āI canāt hear you,ā he says, breathing picking up. āI canāt- please, I- I need-ā
Eddie shuts up, staring at him with wide eyes, and after a second of hesitation, places Steveās hand, palm down, on his chest. He takes deep, purposeful breaths, and Steve can feel his hand moving, feel the breaths, feel his heartbeat-
He takes a breath. Another. Another. By that time, Nancy had gotten a doctor.
Later, heāll learn this is something theyād been watching for, but couldnāt be sure of until he woke up. Later, heāll learn that Eddie lays awake at night, sometimes, hearing the sound Robin makes.
All he knows right now is how to keep breathing, how to keep holding Robinās hand, how to believe heāll be okay, because he has to.
He has to.
He stays with Eddie upon his release, because theyāre together most days anyways, and itās a certain kind of torture on Steveās heart because Eddieās started carrying around a notebook and a pen just to write to Steve whatever he was gonna say, and Steve doesnāt think he could love another person more than he did, but hereās the proof, apparently.
Theyāre sharing a bed, because Wayne had previously called their couch āolder than Jesus,ā and Steve lasted for all of an hour on it before slipping into Eddieās room.
The good thing about sharing a room is it helps curb the nightmares for a time.
Eventually, though, they come back with a vengeance.
Steveās laying in bed, like he does every night, when he rolls over to face Eddie. āEddie?ā He asks. Eddieās always last to sleep, so Steveās not hesitant about asking, except Eddie doesnāt answer.
āEddie?ā He asks again, jostling Eddieās shoulder a bit.
Suddenly he shoots up in the air, and Steve bites back a yell.
Suddenly thereās a voice that sounds like itās coming from everywhere and nowhere, reverberating off the corners of the room, echoing louder and louder. You took everything from me. Eddieās arms snap, and Steve yells, scrambles up, music, except whatās his favorite songāthat puppet one, metal, come on brain, thinkābut thereās nothing here but country, bluegrass, stuff Wayne likes, and Steve turns to watch the blood drain from Eddieās face as another gristly crunch echoes, louder than anything so far. So Iāll take everything from you!
Something reaches out for him, grabs his shoulder, and he yells, twists around, pushes away, hard enough he falls on the ground. He opens his eyes to see Eddie on his bed, Steve sitting just off it, eyes wide and hand reaching to help, stalled halfway. Illuminated by the lamp, too, which wasnāt on half a second ago.
Steve blinks at him, looks at the room. No floating Eddie in the middle of it.
āDream?ā He asks. Eddie nods. He stifles the sob and practically launches himself onto the bed, into Eddieās arms, lets himself shake apart because he can.
Eventually he feels reverberating in Eddieās chest that he knows means words, means speaking, so he looks up at Eddie, whoās looking at the door.
He turns to look, too, and sees Wayne. āS-sorry,ā he tries, still sniffling.
Wayne shakes his head at him, walks into the room, sits on the edge of the bed. Offers his arms out in a hug.
Steve thought he was done crying. Trust Wayne to prove him wrong, because heās tearing up all over again as he leans into Wayne.
His new position means he can see Eddie, who points at him, makes a talking motion with his hand, then points at himself and Wayne. Steve frowns. āYou⦠want me to tell you?ā
Eddie points at Steve again, insistently, and Steve understands: your choice.
āI can,ā he agrees. āWe were in bed and I was tryināa talk to you, but you didnāt answer, and I kept trying to get your attention, but suddenly you- you were up in the air, and your arms and legs broke, and a voiceāit was Vecna, I didnāt recognize it in the dreamāsaid Iād taken everything from him so he was gonna take everything from me. And I was trying to find music, but I couldnāt remember the name of your favorite song, and the only stuff in here was Wayneās stuff, country and bluegrass and stuff like that, andā¦ā he sighs out a broken sob. āI couldnāt save you.ā
Eddie reaches for his hand, but suddenly thatās not enough, he needs to be able to feel his heartbeat, have his breathing move Steveās hand, so he tips over into Eddie again, gets his hand on his chest and his face in the side of his neck.
Eddie says something, but before Steve can move Wayneās got a comforting hand on his back. He removes it after a minute, and Steve can feel the shift in the bed of him getting up, but before he can mourn the loss, Eddieās got his arms wrapped around Steve as he carefully lowers them back down. He rubs a hand up and down Steveās spine, slips the other into Steveās hair.
Steve falls asleep like that.
He wakes up in almost the same position. He tries to apologize, but Eddie waves him off, hands him some clothes and points to the bathroom before pointing to himself and miming cooking.
Steveās heart clenches at the thought. āOkay,ā he whispers.
Robin comes over later, and they sit on the front steps as he recounts what had happened. āHeās just so sweet,ā he sighs. āAnd Iām an idiot whoās letting my heart get involved.ā
Robin wraps an arm around his shoulders and kisses his temple. It doesnāt help as much as heād hoped it would, but he appreciates the gesture anyways.
Later she leaves, and Eddie pulls out his dedicated Steve Notebook.
Iāve got a friend in Indy who knows sign language. I could give her a call, if you want? He writes, and again Steveās all but overcome with love for this man.
Instead of anything he wants to do, he just nods. Eddie grins and hops up to use the phone.
Heās back in a couple of minutes, collapses onto the couch with the notebook before furiously scribbling and handing it to Steve.
I spoke to my friend. She says sorry and it sucks, first of all. Steve snorts and nods. Sheās willing to talk to you, get you started, maybe even get you some books. Does tomorrow work?
Steve gapes up at Eddie. āTomorrow?ā
Eddie nods and grins, then points at Steve in a gesture Steve knows has come to mean you decide.
āThat would be great,ā he says. āSeriously, I- thank you, Eddie.ā
Eddie waves him off, but Steve can see the happy little blush on his cheeks.
They head out the next day. Itās probably twenty minutes into the drive, and even with Eddie sitting next to him in the driverās seat, it feels lonely. He never realized how much heād miss the sound of tires on asphalt. He wasnāt ever truly into music, like Eddie is, but he misses the radio. He misses the wind rushing past, the silence thatās possible to share when both people can hear-
He doesnāt realize heās crying until Eddieās pulled over, a hand on his cheek and a concerned expression on his face. āSorry,ā he tries. Eddie shakes his head, presses his palm more firmly to Steveās cheek. āFuck,ā he mutters. āāS stupid. Just⦠felt alone. I dunno. Thereās, like, a million little things you hear every day that you donāt think about, like the way your hands tap the steering wheel when you turn, or the way your clothes shift and rub against each other, and itās all silent now, and thereās not even music, and-ā he takes a deep, shaky breath. Lets it out as evenly as he can. āI just⦠felt really alone all of a sudden.ā
Eddie brushes his thumb along Steveās cheekbone as he thinks. Suddenly, he grins and moves his hand, shoving a tape into the deck and cranking the sound. He demonstratively puts his hand on the door. Steve laughs and does the same, gasping when he feels the vibrations of the song move through him. He canāt tell notes, but itās something, and then Eddie carefully reaches for his hand, keeps his grip relaxed until Steve smiles at him and tightens his own fingers around Eddieās. āThank you,ā he whispers.
Eddie smiles, nods, and gets back on the road.
They arrive at his friendās apartment in no time, and Steve would be jealous at the length of the hug if Eddie didnāt immediately step back to grab Steveās hand again. Based on his hand motions, heās introducing Steve.
She asks Eddie something, and he turns bright red, pulling a strand of hair across his face as he glances at Steve before looking back at her and answering.
She invites them in, scribbles on a little chalkboard, and hands it to Steve with a smile. Hi, Steve! My name is Nicole. Itās nice to meet you.
He grins up at her. āItās nice to meet you, too.ā
She takes the chalkboard back, scribbles something else. Eddie tells me you recently lost your hearing. Do you mind me asking about that?
āNot at all,ā Steve says, then frowns, somehow just now realizing he doesnāt know the full extent of what happened. āHonestly, all I know is I stood up and got really dizzy, and then I was waking up in the hospital.ā He shrugs. āIāve had a couple of pretty bad concussions, and I guess whatever made me pass out also just⦠took my hearing.ā He shrugs.
Eddie shakes his head, grabs for the chalkboard. Almost. He bites his lip. You passed out, and I wasnāt fast enough. You hit your head on the floor. He looks away, takes a deep breath. Iām sorry.
āThat is not your fault, Eds,ā Steve tells him firmly. Eddie wonāt look him in the eyes, so Steve grabs his chin. āHey, look at me. Not your fault. I donāt blame you. Okay?ā
Eddie shrugs, pointing to himself with a self-deprecating smile, and Steve knows what heās trying to say. I do.
āWell I donāt,ā Steve says. āBut if- if you need to hear it. I forgive you, okay?ā
Eddie nods, eyes big and wet, and Steve pulls him into a hug.
Eddie suddenly laughs, pulling away to wipe his eyes before saying something to Nicole.
Right. Theyāre not alone. āSorry,ā he tells her, but she waves him off, handing over the chalkboard again. I think weāll start on the alphabet today. That way you can at least finger spell what you need, even if itās slow.
āSounds good,ā he says, and she nods, talking the chalkboard to write the alphabet.
Slowly but surely, she teaches Steve and Eddie the alphabet. They get a little tripped up on some of the letters, most noticeably p and q, until Nicole takes pity on them and makes a p. She uses her other hand to draw a line down both her extended fingers, then tracing her own legs. She taps her thumb, peeking out between the two, and with a mischievous grin, points between Steve and Eddieās legs.
They share a look and burst out laughing, but they donāt forget those letters again.
By the end of the day, theyāve gotten through the alphabet with enough regularity that Nicole feels they can practice on each other.
Steve pauses before they leave. T-h-a-n-k, then a pause, then y-o-u.
Nicole smiles, presses her fingertips to her lips, then brings her hand down to chest height, palm up. She does the motion again, and Steve copies her, grinning when she nods excitedly.
āThank you,ā he signs and says, grinning even wider when she pulls him into a quick hug before waving at him and Eddie.
They wave back and pile into the van, Steveās hand in Eddieās before Steve can practically blink. He smiles, unbearably fond, and squeezes to get his attention before signing, āThank you.ā
Eddie just smiles back, throws the van into reverse, and starts home.Ā
They practice more while they make dinner, throwing words like spatula and stir and chop around, and Steve didnāt realize learning could be this fun.
Heās watching Eddie stir the broth, hips moving in a little dance to a song only Eddie knows, and his heart is so full, he has to say something before his heart bursts. āIām gonna say something thatās gonna sound incredibly sappy,ā he says. āBut just⦠please just listen until the end? And try not to tease me too much.ā
Eddie just smiles, grabs his hand and squeezes, and Steve takes a breath before starting.
āIām glad itās you. Iām glad you were there that day, Iām glad you were there when I woke up at the hospital, Iām glad you were there when I realized going home meant being completely alone. Iām glad you made a complete fool of yourself in the hospital lobby, doing charades to let me know I could stay here.ā He takes a breath. āIām glad you have Nicole, because it lets me talk with you easier. Iām glad you never once let me feel like Iām alone, or like Iām going through this alone. Iām glad youāre learning with me. Iām glad youāre making this fun. I didnāt know learning could be fun, but it is with you, and I-ā he takes a breath, swallows the three words that want to come out. āIām glad itās you,ā Steve whispers, āhere, at the end of all things.ā
He doesnāt realize heās crying until Eddieās hands are cradling his cheeks, wiping away tears. Eddieās just as teary-eyed, though, and he pulls away, looking for the notebook. Please donāt punch me.
Steve looks up, brows furrowed, to watch Eddie spell something. I l-o-v-
Thatās as far as he gets before Steve gasps, understanding, or hoping he understands, and pulls Eddie into a kiss.
He pulls back almost immediately to check thatās correct, that that is what Eddie was trying to say, when Eddie pulls him back in, dinner be damned, crowding him in against the counter and doing his best to lick into Steveās mouth.
Steve lets him, pulling away for a sharp inhale before diving right back in, fingers tight in Eddieās hair and the back of his shirt, and thereās a sudden vibration that he just knows means Eddie moans, and suddenly heās dizzy again, but this time he welcomes it, because this time heās not passing out; this time, heās dizzy because heās drunk on love.

Day #7 - Prompt: Free Space | Word Count: 1500 | Rating: T | CW: Language, Alcohol | POV: Steve | Tags: AU, Wrong Number, Right Person Trope, Bisexual Steve Harrington, Meet-Cute
Steve dials the number messily scrawled on the scrap of paper. Heās nervous. Heās always nervous when he has to stick his neck out and make a move on a girl these days.Ā
Yeah, he did the first bit of legwork and got her number out at the bar last night. But he's fumbled the ball and failed enough times, Robin's loving, but accurate, "you suck" burned in his brain, that he's always leery to try again. He should be used to it by now, but itās still uncomfortable and awkward, every goddamn time. If his friends weren't all fretting about his emotional well-being from being so terminally alone, he wouldnāt put forth half the effort anymore.Ā
He has Robin. He has his cat. He's happy.Ā
It rings three times before he hears it connect, āHello?ā
Itās a manās voice, and he hesitates for just a moment, āIām looking for, uh, Lyla?ā
āSorry, man. Wrong number.ā
āOh, Iām sorry, I must have misdialed,ā Steve says, a different kind of embarrassment. But this is one he can handle easier, for sure. So he pushed the wrong button somewhere along the way. His eyesight isn't the best thing he's got going for him.
āNo worries, man,ā the other guy laughs, seemingly carefree about being bothered.
They each disconnect and then Steve reads, and re-reads, the number before dialing again. More carefully this time.
It rings only once before itās connected.
āStill me, dude,ā the familiar voice relays, still light and friendly.
āWow. Iām so sorry. Clearly, I was given a fake number. That's embarrassing,ā Steve laughs, because this is more embarrassing than misdialing. He's uncomfortable and mortified to admit that this girl just didn't want him to call her. Even if he's only admitting it to a stranger.
She should have just told him no. He hates that she didn't, for her sake, too.
āShitty move,ā the other guy answers.
āYeah, well. I'm sorry I bothered you. Again. I promise to cross-check any future numbers against yours before dialing, just in case.ā
The guy laughs, "Well, now. Don't go to any trouble for my sake. Honestly,ā and he doesn't sound put-out at all, ādonāt worry about it. She clearly didnāt have the balls to just, be, like, honest. That sucks.ā
Steve laughs, maybe if she'd had balls this wouldn't have happened at all. Most men feel more comfortable just saying no, he thinks, which is sad but true. He swings both ways, and maybe he should take this as a sign to lean the other way for a while. See if that works out any better for him.Ā
It probably won't, but he could try.
āThere goes my big weekend plans,ā Steve teases, uncertain why he does it, even as the words tumble out of his mouth. He needs to hang up the phone and let this guy get back to his own life.
āDude. That's a problem I can solve. Iām gigging tonight. You have to come. Let me entertain you.ā
āYou donāt have to do that.ā
āWhatever. I want to. Just show up. Itāll be a great story, will it not?ā
It would be a great story. One he could even tell Robin to convince her heās living a little, āI donāt even know your name. What if youāre a serial killer or something?ā
āYep, thatās me. Vicious killer,ā the guy laughs, āIām Eddie, man. And Iām a fucking ball to be around. Youāll want to take me up on this awesome offer. Weāll all be down at Hellfire Club around eight. Show up. If you think weāre murderous, you donāt have to follow us to any secondary, secluded locations.ā
Hellfire Club is literally two blocks from Steveās apartment. He's been past it countless times, but never inside. It's always dark. Like it's not even open, making him unsure about what kind of bar it is, it's so nondescript from the outside. Not to mention the name is a little intimidating. He'd half-convinced himself it's a BDSM club.Ā
But, now that he's been invited, he could just walk down and see whatās the what, āHow will I know which guy you are?ā
Eddie laughs, āYouāll know. Trust me.ā
Steve has a hard time trusting anyone new these days, but Eddie seems friendly enough.Ā
Steve realizes he must have been quiet for too long, because Eddie starts talking again.
āIāll have on a badass battle vest. Look for that. You'll see me. It's impossible not to. I promise.ā
āOkay,ā Steve agrees, even if heās not sure what a battle vest even is.
āNow, are you going to tell me your name, or will that just be a surprise?ā Eddie asks.
Steve laughs, āSteve. Iām Steve.ā
āWell, Iāll see you later, Steve.ā
Steve stands in front of his closet for far too long, trying to find something to wear that doesnāt look too nerdy. He assumes Eddie's cool. He sounded cool, and Steve may have been cool in high school, but these days he just keeps his head down and goes through life, content to be fairly unnoticed. He finally settles on a black t-shirt. Basic, classic. Timeless.
Boring.Ā
But that's a risk he's willing to take.
He walks down the street slowly and arrives around eight-thirty. The windows are still all blacked out, tinted to the point he can't see anything inside. There's just the neon sign with the Hellfire Club over the door.
When he pulls open the door, he's in a hallway that's painted all black, with a bouncer at the end, stationed at a door. Steve kind of wants to turn around, flee, but he doesn't. He's already here. He might as well at least see. Robin will kill him if he chickens out.
He gives his ID to the bouncer, and is directed down a staircase. He really hopes this isn't a sex club.Ā
It's not.
And as soon as he crosses the threshold into the bar, yes, he knows Eddie instantly. Heās gotta be the one on the bar, pouring shots directly into various mouths. Steve knows he could turn around right now and this adventure could end. But watching Eddie laughing and prancing up and down the bar with flourish, clearly having fun, makes Steve want to go up and meet this guy.
Steve takes an open seat at the end of the bar, kind of out of the way, and just watches Eddie work the crowd.
The bar is blaring It's Raining Men and Eddie is playing up the song, big time. He's not a stripper, at least Steve doesn't think he is, but he's working the crowd for tips, absolutely. He keeps handing them down to a curly-headed guy, who keeps stuffing them into an overflowing jar.
Steve's pretty sure this is a gay club, or at least queer friendly. Maybe he has found a place for himself, something that's been right here under his nose, all this time.
When Eddie finally jumps down off the bar, Steve watches him work the rest of the room.
The other guy comes over and takes Steve's order, and he doesn't quite have the same flourish, but he's efficient and confident with a bottle and jigger.
"Name for the tab?" he asks, shaking the drink Steve had picked from the list.
"Steve," Steve says, and the guy looks up and meets his eyes.
Surely not. This doesn't feel like this is Eddie. He is wearing a vest, a red plaid one, but the other guy also has a denim vest on, full of patches.
"Eddie?" Steve questions, needing to make sure.
"Gareth," the guy says, "that's Eddie," he clarifies, pointing at the one Steve had correctly clocked as Eddie to begin with. "You're his wrong number guy, right?"
Steve nods. He supposes that's what he is, "Yeah. That's me. Loser in love."
Gareth laughs, and it makes Steve smile.
"That's our specialty here, you'll feel right at home," Gareth teases.
"That makes two of us," Steve admits, and Gareth smiles as he finishes shaking Steve's drink, putting it down in front of him.
"On the house. First-timers to Hellfire drink free," Gareth says, and then he's walking away.Ā
Steve's eyes follow Gareth across the bar, watching as he taps Eddie on the shoulder, leaning close to his ear, pointing right at Steve.
Eddie looks, meets his eyes, and Steve raises his hand, giving him a small, little wiggle of his fingers.
A huge smile spreads across Eddie's face as he bounds in Steve's direction.
Eddie's quickly right in his personal space, squeezing both of Steve's shoulders, greeting him with a smile, "Welcome to Hellfire."
Steve smiles, liking the feeling of Eddie's hands bleeding through his t-shirt, warming him.
Eddie lets go, and Steve misses the feeling already, but Eddie stays. Sliding onto the stool next to Steve, "I'm glad you came."
And Steve's completely honest as he answers, "Me too."
If you want to write your own, or see more entries for this challenge, pop on over to @steddie-week and follow along with the fun!
Notes: If you're too young to remember it, reach out and touch someone was the slogan/jingle for Bell System telephone company back in the day. So, that's where the title comes from, as a play on the wrong number phone call trope.
for @steddie-week Iām behind on it but I couldnāt resist day 3, and itās a little late because I fell asleep while writing it, that's how sleep deprived I am haha. prompt: first kiss
āOkay, okay! It's my turn now. Sir Steven, Lady Birdie, tell me, who was your first kiss?ā Eddie giggles from his spot on the carpet. He smells like stale menthols and pine; Steve canāt get enough of it. He has to resist from leaning his head into Eddie and taking a breath of him.
Steve is starting to believe he needs his head checked. Again. Wanting to smell one of his friend's necks isn't normal.
Steve is also starting to realize that maybe that is because he wants to be more than friends. God, he is such a loser sometimes.
āOh, this is unfair! You know the rules state that we canāt ask it back now. Boooo.ā Robin chants from her place on the couch, where she hangs upside down. Steve is for once glad they arenāt playing a drinking game; he is sure Robin would have vomited by now otherwise.
āI still think this a weird game to be playing.ā Steve dodges the question and nudges Eddie with his knee.
āCāmon Harrington, questions is an absolute solid getting-to-know-you game.ā Eddie nudged his knee back.
āDude weāve been friends for six months.ā
āYes but there are so many layers I have yet to peel.ā
Robin grunts from her upside-down position, Steve can tell all the blood has finally rushed to her head, and she tumbles onto the ground next to them. āGotta agree with Metal Man here, Steve-o. Iāve known you even longer, and I still donāt know everything. And we are practically connected.
Steve blows air from his lips, āSo this is just a ploy to expose all my secrets.ā
Steve can tell that Robin, who might as well share a soul with him at this point, can sense how uncomfortable he is beginning to feel. Her teasing softens for a moment. āWhat if I went first, yeah?ā
Steve pauses, āYeah okay.ā
āYou got to promise not to make fun of me.ā
āOf course, Robs.ā
āI make no such promises.ā Eddie interrupts but ultimately cuts the tension in the room. Steve kind of feels like it is on purpose, by the way his eyes skim Steve carefully, and the way Robin lets out a loud snort.
āWasnāt talking to you doofus. I donāt actually respect your opinion of me.ā
āHey!ā Eddie protests, but they all know he isnāt really offended.
Robin chuckles lightly, but continues. āIt was in middle school, at one of my first girl-boy parties; gross, right? I hate that we called it those. Anyway. They decide to play spin the bottle, and I feel pressure because my only friend at the time is Barb, and she didnāt come and Colleen Walsh is doing it, and sheāwell, sheās the prettiest, most popular girl in school at the time and Iād be an idiot not to follow along. So weāre playing Spin the Bottle, right? And rounds go by, and it doesnāt land on me, and Iām grateful but Colleen notices. She goads me on to do it, take a spin since it isnāt fair I havenāt kissed anyone. So, wanting to get over being the center of attention, I reach over and spin it, and it lands onāā
āWait.ā Steve stops Robin, realizing she is about to out herself to Eddie on Steveās behalf. He doesnāt want her to do that but on anything but her own terms. āAre you sure about this, Robs?ā
Robin throws her head back and laughs, āYea, Iām sure dingus. No need to worry. Anyway, youāll never believe who it lands on.ā
Eddie wiggles his eyebrows, āCāmon buck donāt leave us hanging.ā
āTommy Hagan.ā
Eddie and Steve both start choking on air while Steve screams, āWhat!?!ā
Eddie collapses on the ground with a dramatic groan, covering his face with his hands and mumbling, āwhy cruel world?ā Robin giggles at his antics.
āYouāre telling me it wasnātā¦.?ā Steve trails off, hoping Robin gets the hint.
āThat it wasnāt a girl? No dingus, just because Iām a lesbian doesnāt mean all my experiences are with women. Besides, I was 12; I didnāt realize staring at Colleenās boobs wasnāt jealousy.ā
āOh, thank god, you know; I thought I was going to have to break the news to you that your gayer than the menās locker room after a winning game,ā Eddie mumbles behind his hands still on the ground.
āOnly you would make a sports reference in relation to gayness, Eds. Also, wait, you knew she was lesbian? How did you know? Why are you freaking out then?ā Steve rapid fires questions.
Still covered with his hands, āLike seeks like, Harrington. Itās like a sixth sense.ā
Steveās mouth goes dry, āYouāre gay?ā He says hopefully.
Eddie finally removes his hands from his face but doesnāt sit up. āYea, Stevie, thought you knew, honestly. Not like itās a secret, all of Hawkins talks about it.ā
āI try not to listen to the rumor mill.ā
A soft smile graces Eddieās face, āOne of the many things I love about you sweetheart.ā
Steve tries not to blush, but ultimately fails. āStill doesnāt explain why youāre freaking out about Tommy. Sure, he sucks, but like I reacted that way cause I was friends with him at some point. Whatās youāre excuse?ā
Finally Eddie sits up with a groan. āOkay, promise not to laugh or freak out?ā
Robin and Steve both nod and mumble a little āyea of courseā.
Eddie rubs a hand down his face, āOkay, I freaked out because even though itās not my turn to answer and I donāt have to, wellāitās because. Okay, Iām stalling; itās because Tommy Hagan was also my first kiss. When I was 15, under the bleachers.ā
Robin and Steve are both silent, Eddie looks at them expectantly. āAre you guys going to say anything?ā
Robin speaks up first, āI think this is the closest we can get to not freaking out.ā
āI think I would prefer that over the freaky twin silence.ā
Steve still stays quiet while Robin proceeds to react, āOh my god Munson! This is the funniest and freakiest thing ever. And not in a freak way you like! This is magnificent, oh my godā¦.ā Robin continues to cackle and make fun of Eddie, but Steve tunes it out. He can feel all the blood rush to his ears, blocking out all the sound from the room. Tommy. Tommy. He has kissed both of his best friends, one of which he wants to kiss himself. That just seems unfair to Steve. It hurts Steve, and he doesnāt know why. Actually, he knows precisely why.
āMy first kiss was when I was 13,ā Steve says abruptly, not making eye contact. The both of them stop their bickering and turn to Steve. They stay silent, as if they know Steve needs it to get through it. He is thankful for them both.
āI was 13, and my parents werenāt home. It had become the usual at this point, but I was sad because it was my birthday, and this was the first birthday they didnāt even send a card. And Tommy decided to come over to cheer me up; this was back, I guess, when he still cared too. And we didnāt do much; I didnāt like to make a big fuss about my birthday even then, but it was a nice night out just before the break of summer. So we decided to stargaze on the roof. And I donāt know how it happened, but one second weāre trying to find the Little Dipper, and the next, Tommy is kissing me. It was nice, honestly. To have someone you care about show you affection. And when he pulled away, I smiled at him, but he just stared. And thenāā Steve swallows thickly before looking up at Eddie and Robin, who both look at him with rapt attention.
āThen his face turns angry, and he punches me. He punches me so hard that I almost fall off the roof. He tells me not to be a queer, and if I told anyone, who would tell everyone what I was. And it seemed unfair, right? Because he kissed me, I only smiled. I havenāt kissed a boy since.ā
Suddenly there is an arm around his shoulder, āStevieā¦.ā Eddie tucks Steveās head into the crook of his neck, and Steve begins to sob.
Robin quietly gets up, āIām going to make us some tea.ā Steve knows she can sense that he needs a moment with Eddie. Steve loves her more than life.
āIām sorry this is stupid. I donāt even know why Iām crying.ā
Eddie rubs soft circles on his back, āItās not stupid, honey. He hurt you in more ways than one, and traumatized you from exploring yourself. You have every right to be upset. Thank you for telling us. You didnātāyou didnāt have to. You could have lied, or told us your first kiss with a girl.āā
āColleen Walsh.ā Steve interrupts into Eddieās neck.
Eddie barks out a laugh, āOf course it was. Anyway, Steve, thank you for sharing. Iām glad you feel safe with us.ā
Steveās tears are no longer. āI always feel safe with you, Eds.ā And the Steve finally does the thing heās been wanting to do all night. He takes a big sniff of Eddie. Steve doesnāt care if itās weird because he settles a sort of calm in him.
Eddie grips his waist tight, and puts a finger under Steveās chin, pulling his face close to his own. āYea, I do? Does that mean you also trust me?ā
Steve can feel Eddieās breath on his lips. He knows itās probably not good how quickly his mood has changed, but he canāt find it in himself to care. The air between them is electric, and intense. Steve can feel it make his whole body come alive. āOf course I do.ā
Eddie leans even closer, āGood. Because I think itās a damn shame a pretty boy like you hasnāt kissed another boy since.ā Then Eddie presses their lips together.
Steve isnāt sure if someone were to ask what his first kiss with Eddie was like if he would be able to answer. Itās indescribable; itās perfect. But if he is to try, it would be this, soft, slow, deep, and oh so very good. Steve can feel the heat from Eddieās lips pulsing into his own. Eddieās hands' grip Steveās face, angling him deeper as he slides his tongue into his mouth. Steve pulls him closer by his t-shirt. Going crazy off the taste of salt and chocolate that now swipes his tongue.
They both pull back a little breathlessly, hands still gripping each other. They lean their foreheads together, and Steve smiles. He smiles so big his face hurts. And Eddie does the most thing in return,
He smiles back.
The moment is broken, though, when Robin enters the room again with a bowl of popcorn and a loud āOh thank god, I was sick of the pining. From both of you.ā
Eddie sputters while Steve just laughs at her. āI thought you were making tea Birdie?ā
Robin sits down next to them again, āToo much work and I was snacky.ā
Steve throws popcorn at her head but isnāt upset at all. He leans his head on Eddieās shoulder, and Eddie kisses the top of Steveās head.
Robin smiles fondly at them. Then her face scrunches up in pain, āWait, all of our first kisses was Tommy Hagan?ā
āYep.ā
āUnfortunately so.ā
āGod I do not want to give that twerp any more credit in life than I have to. Why are we all like this?ā
Steve giggles while Eddie shrugs.
Robin canāt keep a straight face anymore and falls into laughter. āWait, does this mean we are all bounded by this? I completely unrelated, non-upside down experience?ā
Eddie speaks up before Steve, āI believe so, Lady Buckley. A trauma outside of other worlds binds us. We have been bound since before the slain of Vecna.ā
Robin shrieks, āAwee, guys! We were always meant to meet then.ā
Then Robin tackles the both of them to the ground in a bear hug. Steveās not even mad that sheās in the middle of Eddie and him.
Because this, right here, is all the love heāll ever need.

i'm challenging myself to keep each of these at 660 words; see day one for more of an explanation!
Steve is going insane.
Has been for a while now, actually, about the same fuckinā thing.
Things. There are two of them.
And the fact that these specific ones are what done him in.Ā
Of all the hands heās held, had pressed to him both in loving embrace and in the sharp stings of a punch, of a slap⦠these ones are driving him crazy.
Theyāre seemingly everywhere. They take up the precious little room in his head for conscious thought (head injuries will do that) whether or not theyāre even in the room with him.
It's not even that he's starved for touch either, as Robin first assumed, he's normally a very tactile guy to start with! Touch is a regular occurrence for him.
But those hands. With their ringed fingers and warm, dry palms that are somehow the perfect shape for the sharp curve of his jaw.
The hands that first held him firm with anger, with fear, that now have 1) rubbed his back on multiple occasions, 2) carded through his hair exactly once, 3) have found themselves resting over his shoulder, on his thigh (brief as it was), and along the side of his face.
That last one was the one that really did it.
It was teasingly, too. Robin said he was thinking too much about it at first, but Steve didnāt think he was thinking about it enough.Ā
For hours upon hours Steve thought about the feeling of Eddie Munsonās hands cradling his face while their owner cooed a soft āAwe, you okay, sweetheart? You feelinā alright?ā to him.
He laughed it off at the time, pushing Eddie and his damn hands off him and back to his side of the counter at Family Video with a āGet off me, dude.ā like an idiot.
Eddieās added teasing to Robinās good-natured ribbing about his most recent addition to her now-hypothetical āYOU SUCKā column is all it was. Teasing. No matter how often he thought about that moment in the weeks after.
āSteve!ā
He startles at the noise, turning to Robin wide-eyed āWhat?! Iām standing Right Here yāknow.ā
āBut your brain wasn't Right Here now was it?ā
āI heard you.ā
āI called your name three times.ā
ā...Nuh uh.ā
Robin rolls her eyes at him, āWhatever, can you put your Eddie fantasies away for like an hour so we can go through the inventory?ā
He can, though after an hour passes and theyāre not even close to a third of the way done sorting through new tapes, Steve finds himself nearly bursting with the need to talk about his crush.
āI bet heās good with his fingers.ā
āGross!ā
āI mean because he plays guitar!ā
Robin drops the tape in her hand to cover both her ears, āLalalalalalalaaa!ā
āIām sorry! I donāt know whatās wrong with me.ā
āYes you do,ā she says, picking the tape back up and placing it on an already too-tall stack. āYouāre super horny for him but donāt want to make a move.ā
āWhat if he doesnāt feel the same way?ā Robin snorts at him, like she does every time he says that. āHeās just soā and Iām soā and weā Yāknow?ā
āNope.ā
He drops his head into his hands, sighing. It sounds sickeningly longing even to him āI just want to hold his hand.. Why?? Thatās so dumb my heart hurts.ā
Steve picks his head up when Robin doesnāt say anything. Sheās looking at him with⦠some sort of expression on her face. āWhat?ā
She regards him for a second longer. āI donāt think youāre horny for him.ā
āOh no, believe me, I very much want him to fāā
āI donāt think youāre just horny for him.ā
It takes half a breath for him to get it. Surprising, given the previously mentioned lack of extra room in his brain.Ā
āOh my god.ā
āYup.ā
āOh my god. Iām in love with Eddie Munson.ā
Another voice pipes up from behind them. āYouāre what?!ā
Steddie Week Day 1: Hunger / Pining / Somebody to Love by Queen
The moon cut through the trees beyond the pines of the strangerās bedroom. It turned her pale skin silver and her dark hair blue. She wasnāt a stranger. Steve reminded himself.Ā
She was a girl, named after a month or a flower. Steve couldnāt remember. Heād done all the right things. Heād taken her to the movies, paid for their dinner, despite neither having touched their food and told her she was pretty. She was beautiful but he couldnāt remember a thing about her.Ā
God, he shouldāve been better than this. This was the kind of person heād been back in high school. Heād been starving for attention and craving attraction, never wanting to be alone. Heād slept with her because he knew it meant he could stay the night.Ā
Heād done the same thing before Nancy when Tommy and Carol had been busy and he hadnāt wanted to stumble home to the silence of his house. Heād told himself he was better than what he was doing, but heād done it anyway.Ā
She hadnāt been looking for a relationship. Steve remembered that distinctly. He was always looking for a relationship. It was a sign that he shouldāve called it a night after dinner, kissed her cheek and headed off to save himself the heartache. He knew if he slept with her once, heād want to do it again. Not because he liked her, but because he liked being wanted.Ā
Heād sleep with her again if he got the chance. Heād sleep with her until he fell in love with her and thatās when sheād end things. Steve didnāt know how to love half-way and people always knew. He fell in love with the wrong people.Ā
Hawkins had gone to hell, and he hadnāt wanted to spend another night alone. He couldāve asked Robin to come over, but that would mean admitting something was wrong. Heād wanted to ask Eddie.Ā
The men had grown closer since Eddie left the hospital, closer than Steve cared to admit. Heād been avoiding Eddie in the same way heād been avoiding the silence of his home. He had the habit of falling in love with the wrong people and soon the boy would work it out.Ā
When Steve finally unpicked the mess of feelings he had for Eddie and saw it for what it really was, love, heād run from it. Not because Eddie was a guy, though Steve would be lying if heād said that hadnāt surprised him. That hadnāt been what had shaken him. For Steve Harrington, love always ended badly. He wanted Eddie to stick around, so heād been avoiding him, contradictory as it was.Ā
The girl slept with the radio on because she couldnāt stand the silence. It was something she and Steve had in common. Sheād fallen asleep hours before. Heād been listening to rock ballad after rock ballad, his mood growing ever the more sour because of it. He ground his teeth and clutched the sheets as Freddie Mercuryās lyrics mirrored his internal dialogue. Cheesy as it sounded, all he wanted at that moment was somebody to love.Ā
His heart in his chest pounded like it did in the last quarter of his championship game or in the moments before he was about to break his swimming PB. He remembered the same feeling washing over him as a child when he heard his fatherās footfalls on the steps as he arrived home from an overseas trip. Heād crawl under the bed, count to one hundred and wait for the thunderstorm in his chest to settle. He was having a panic attack.Ā
Steve leapt out of bed without thinking, shook the girl's shoulder and told her he was leaving. He didnāt hear her response.Ā
Steve didnāt know how he got to Robinās house, but he found himself at her door pounding on the knocker despite the late hour, trying to come up with a way to make it up to Mr and Mrs Buckley for waking them up at an ungodly hour. The house remained silent. No one answered the door.Ā
Shit. Robin and her family were in Michigan for her grandmotherās birthday. Steve knew that. Still, when his life felt like it was going to shit, he went to Robin. He didnāt know what to do without her.Ā
He wasnāt sure what was wrong with him. Robin was better. If she were there, sheād be able to tell Steve what he was thinking, but she wasnāt. He was alone. Heād have to work it out for himself.Ā
He sat on the Buckleyās front stoop, pulled his knees to his chest and tried to understand why he felt like someone was crushing his ribs with a hydraulic press. He was overcome with an onslaught of conflicting emotions. Wanting. Shame for wanting. Irritation at the shame. Indignation at the conflicting soup of sensations that rose, fell and mingled within him. He felt like he was going to puke, but nothing happened. More than anything else, he didnāt want to be alone. For once, he didnāt want to be with a stranger, either.Ā
He pulled himself together for long enough to drive to the trailer park. He cut his headlights at the turnoff and navigated the dirt road to the Munsonās trailer blind. He didnāt hop out of the car. The digital clock let him know it was three in the morning. The lights were still on in the trailer, but Steve couldnāt bring himself to get out of the BMW. Heād been avoiding Eddie. He needed to turn around and go home, but he couldnāt.Ā
Steveās shallow breaths fogged the windows of the Beamer, turning the world outside into a haze of light and darkness. He had no idea what he was doing.Ā
The wrapping of knuckles against the car door made Steve jump so high his knees collided with the steering wheel. Eddieās blurry visage appeared on the other side of the glass, his hands cupped around his eyes, theĀ facsimile of binoculars as he peered in jokingly at Steve. Something in Steveās face wiped the smirk from Eddieās. He opened the driverās door and crouched back on his haunches so he and Steve were face to face, his wide brown eyes raking over Steveās body, searching for something in the features.Ā
āDid something happen?ā Eddie asked in place of a āhelloā.Ā
Steve wanted to say something, but he couldnāt find the right words, hell he couldnāt find any words. He managed to shake his head and let his vision drop to his lap.Ā
Eddie moved closer, but Steve pulled back. It was a knee-jerk response heād built up in their time apart. Donāt let Eddie get too close. Then heāll never know. Eddie bit his lip and shrugged off his jacket. It wasnāt the same one heād given Steve months before. That one was past the point of no return, but it felt like a mirrored memory. He held it out to Steve. When the boy gave the fabric a perplexed look Eddie rolled his eyes and whispered.Ā
āFor your modesty, dude. Remember?ā Eddie vaguely gestured in Steveās direction. He realised he hadnāt bothered to get dressed. He sat there in nothing but his underwear. Yeah. Great move, Harrington.Ā
āYou wanna come in?ā Eddie asked, backing away, giving Steve his space.Ā
āOkay,ā Steve replied, proud heād managed to do something other than gawk. He pulled Eddieās jacket tightly around his body and let himself be led into the Munsonsā living room.Ā
Steve collapsed on the faded couch, placing one of the cushions in his lap, feeling suddenly aware of his lack of clothes and the chill in the air. At least his breathing was back to normal. That was something. The whole place smelled of cigarettes. Steve inhaled deeply.
Eddie busied himself in the kitchen, grabbing two mugs from Wayneās collection. Of course, Eddie grabbed the stupid Garfield mug, which Steve knew was his favourite. He gave Steve a new mug each time he was over. Sometimes theyād brandish names of nowhere towns or fast-food chains, and other times itād be some niche pop culture memorabilia. That night, he placed theĀ āMy Little Ponyā mug, complete with its baby pink handle and faded rainbow, usually reserved for Dustin, in Steveās hand.Ā
He drank deeply. It was hot chocolate. Eddie sat beside him. His body was close, but not close enough to touch. Eddie was warm.Ā
āYou want to talk about it?ā Eddie asked, rolling his head across the back of the couch, his eyes never quite meeting Steveās.Ā
āNot yet,ā Steve reasoned. Not tonight. It wasnāt the night for confessions. He didnāt want to lose Eddie, not yet.Ā
āYou hungry?ā Steve hadnāt realised he was until Eddie asked.
āStarving,ā He confessed, not looking up to meet Eddieās gaze.Ā
The warmth at his side was gone for an instant. Once more there was a rattle from the kitchen. Steveās fingers absentmindedly traced the mugās faded rainbow.
āYouāre not going to puke are you Stevie? You look a little green around the gills,ā Eddie called over his shoulder. Steve shook his head.Ā
āAre we okay, Steve?ā Eddie asked after a moment, his voice hesitant.Ā
When Steve looked up, Eddie wasnāt looking at him. He was busy digging through the pantry. Maybe heād needed to ask the question when his back was turned. The former king had never heard the boy sound so small.Ā
Steve was busy working out how to reply when Eddie ploughed on.
āBecause a week ago you just dropped off the edge of the map, dude. I saw you every goddamn day, twice a day, for months, then nothing. And then you show up out of the blue, in the middle of the night, in your underwear, looking like Vecnaās come back for round two. Youāre not giving me much to go off here, so Iāve gotta ask. Are we good? Did I do something wrong?ā Eddie spoke in a flurry, never turning to face Steve. Nevertheless, Steve saw right through him. Heād screwed things up already, hadnāt he?Ā
āYou didnāt do anything wrong. I did something wrong,ā Steve spoke, admitting more than heād intended.Ā
Eddie finally turned to face him, a cereal box in one hand and a perplexed look on his face. He looked like he wanted to push for more, but understood Steve was seconds away from turning and running.Ā
The boy returned to Steveās side, flopping gracelessly onto the couch, kicking his feet up on the coffee table. He handed Steve the box and watched as the boy eyed it cautiously.Ā
āI know itās no breakfast bagel, but we havenāt gone grocery shopping in weeks. Itās the best weāve got.ā
Steve Harrington was used to living his life in a particular way. Heād always had to be put together, well-mannered, and the kind of kid his parents would be proud of. All that to say, Steve had never eaten cereal out of the box with his hands. It felt odd and primal in a way he hadnāt anticipated.Ā Ā
āHowād you know about the breakfast bagels?āĀ
He hadnāt eaten breakfast bagels since high school. Without swim training every morning, he had time to cook himself actual food, something more variable than his old faithful breakfast bagel. Maybe Eddie had been talking to Robin.Ā
āI just... I noticed you sometimes, back in high school. We had a few classes together and you were kind of a big deal, you know, Harrington,ā Steve looked down, a knot growing in his stomach.Ā
He passed the cereal over to Eddie and watched the boyās hands plunge into the depths of the box. He ate unabashedly, open-mouthed. Steve shouldāve found it disgusting. He didnāt. He had it bad.Ā
āYou couldnāt do anything wrong when it comes to you and me. You know that, right?ā Eddie asked after a moment, returning to the subject Steve was desperately retreating from.Ā
āYou donāt know what it is yet. If you did...ā Steveās throat seized up. He remembered another night, with Robin in a bathroom stall. The details were fuzzy, hazed over by drugs, but the words came back to him now. Robinās words in his mouth. Robinās words, seconds before she came out. Steve had told himself he wasnāt doing that, not tonight, yet here he was.Ā
āYou wouldnāt want to be my friend.ā Eddieās brows drew together, seeming to understand the enormity of the situation. He swallowed thickly, squared off his shoulders and looked Steve dead in the eye.
āTry me,ā He breathed. All bravado. Steve noticed a tremble in his voice.Ā
Now or never. Heād have to rip the damn band-aid off.Ā
āI came here because I couldnāt sleep and I didnāt want to be next to anyone but you,ā the words gushed from Steveās lips. As soon as they were out, he wanted to take them back.Ā
He didnāt look at Eddie, couldnāt look at him, though he noticed a flurry of movement as his leg bounced up and down rapidly, all nervous energy. It wasnāt as though Steve and Eddie hadnāt slept beside each other before, but this was different. Eddie had to know what Steve meant. When it came to his feelings, he was always so damn transparent.Ā
āI stopped hanging out with you because I didnāt want you to know...ā The words stuck in Steveās throat. He turned his eyes skyward, wishing for some kind of divine intervention, maybe another apocalypse, anything to stop him from having to admit it.Ā
āSteve,ā Eddie breathed, imploring the boy to look at him through tone alone. Despite his better judgment, Steve did.Ā
Eddieās brown eyes were open, his face the picture of sympathy and understanding. Steve didnāt want it. He gritted his teeth and returned his eyes to his hands.Ā
āSteve... you know Iām gay, right?ā Eddie said, his hand appearing on Steveās knee, giving it a squeeze. He hadnāt, but then again, it wasnāt as big a surprise as it should be.Ā
āNo, but...you know, the last two people I loved didnāt love me back. Even if you do like guys, my track record is pretty shit,ā Steve reasoned, then realised what heād said as Eddieās hand tightened on his knee.Ā
āShit. I didnāt mean that. Well- I did, but... thatās intense. Right? Too intense,ā Steve rambled, wondering if Robin was rubbing off on him. He still couldnāt meet Eddieās eyes.
Eddieās hand brushed Steveās cheek, startling the boy and causing him to look over once more. Eddie didnāt look freaked out or disgusted, as Steve had worried he was. He didnāt look pitying either, as Robin had on the floor of the bathroom when heād confessed to her. If anything, Eddie looked relieved.Ā
āYou know Steve,Ā āintenseā is one of my favourite adjectives. You think I dance around on tables because of my quiet and well-adjusted demeanour? If you asked someone to describe me,Ā the word āintenseā is going to come up. Not to mention Iāve been nursing a crush on you since my first go at senior year with your stupid floppy hair and youāre too-tight basketball shorts."
āYou never mentioned...ā Steveās voice was drowned out by Eddieās snort.Ā
āOf course, I didnāt. I didnāt think there was a chance in hell you liked me back and it was-ā
āIntense,ā Steve finished with a wry smile. Eddie nodded, too enthusiastically, his face suddenly very close to Steveās.Ā
āIām going to kiss you now,ā Eddie breathed, pausing for a second to check if it was okay with Steve.Ā
He couldnāt wait. He surged forward, crushing their lips together. It was intense, just the way they liked it.Ā
