So I've been calling this the only blog that's cis, only to find out that SteamOS is the most trans distro there could be
idk wheather this deserves a blog swap w/ someone else, a new pride flag, or my retirement
why didn't any of y'all tell me sooner?
BREAKING NEWS: Valve has just unveiled three new pieces of hardware:
The Steam Machine, a PC packed into a compact cube that runs SteamOS and is 6x more powerful than the Steam Deck!
The Steam Frame, a stand-alone VR headset that can be used for both VR and none-VR games!
The Steam Controller, including track pads, motion controls, and easy wireless connection!
All will be coming in early 2026!
No, Valve did not tease a new Portal game... But Valve did showcase Enigma Protocol to demonstrate the new Steam Machine!
If you were unaware, Linus Tech Tips was given an early look at the new Steam hardware announced by Valve yesterday. At the 10:26 mark, people spotted an at the time unidentified Portal game running on a nearby monitor.
While I am sorry to say that it looks like Valve isn't working on a new Portal project, I am surprised and delighted to know that Valve enjoys my work enough to use it for promotional content. Enigma Protocol came out nearly 5 years ago now, and I never expected it to have the staying power that it has, let alone being (indirectly) featured by Valve themselves!
If you haven't already, please check out Enigma Protocol on the Steam Workshop!
Steam Workshop: Portal 2. Set shortly after the events of the Cooperative Testing Initiative, a test subject wakes to GLaDOS' newest testing
i dont understand the appeal of steamos for first-time linux users. is it literally just "i need a major brand attached before i can use software that already exists"? because if so that's fucking dystopian

i'm gonna evicerate somethin SteamOS won't install someone help
Steam is such weird software for me as a Linux enjoyer because there are things I really love about it and things I can't stand at the same time.
Love:
They actually care about Linux to the point of making their own distro and putting it on their own device
Their model for buying games is still (mostly) pleasant enough that I almost never pirate games despite shamelessly pirating every other kind of media (I was never a regular Spotify or Netflix user)
Hate:
Proprietary with DRM, obv.
The client will not use native window decorations no matter what, nor native notifications
Related, it refuses to actually close when you click the X. No, you are not so important that I want you running in the background all the time
Steam is one of the main reasons I still dual-boot; I just don't want it and its messy behaviors on my carefully curated Arch install. But on Windows I generally enjoy it.
California is Requiring all Operating Systems to Enact Age Verification
AB 1043 also requires OS providers to pipe a real-time age checker to every app developer who requests it.
California signed into law Assembly Bill 1043: The Digital Age Assurance Act which will require ALL operating systems to perform age verification as of January 1, 2027.
Colorado is attempting to pass a similar bill:
Rather than having people verify their age on every app they use, Colorado's SB26-051 would implement a way for devices to share an 'age-bra
People in California and Colorado, please contact your legislators to let them know that this is not acceptable.
