I'll start off easy with Stepan Trofimovič and Varvara Petrovna's relationship.
I love them, I ship them to the end of the world, and I firmly believe I haven't written a full fleshed fanfic about them simply because I'm a coward: we're given the guidelines for their relationship in their youth and I find it nothing short of endearing: the way he's so pathetic and she's stoic (Also the actress who interpreted Varvara in the Italian TV series for Demons is how I envision her, no I won't apologise). Also the whole plot about Stepan's wedding is a gold mine for angst, I loved it.
Now for Pyotr Stepanovič Verchovenskij. He's horrendous, I love him. (WHAT YOU'RE ABOUT TO READ IS NOT IN ANY WAY SHAPE OR FORM A LITERARY CRITIQUE, I'M JUST HAVING FUN)
The whole speech about how he's nothing without Stavrogin???
How to interpret it? A convoluted and toxic love confession? A heartfelt message from someone who believes in a cause? ( <- fyi that's the wrong option) Or a show in Pyotr's psychological depth and the way he's so obsessed with someone who already has a name for themselves, be it in good or bad (take also Šatov for example, Pyotr's obsession with him and him killing him are wonderful developments), someone to be the symbol of a revolution he doesn't even believe in, simply because he won't take accountability for his own actions?
Pyotr IS a theatrical twink, outside of the actors casted to embody him. That man lives for the drama, a Diva. He craves the spotlight, but only when it suits him (i.e. him barging in to talk about the way his father complained to him about his life in the letters he received when he was in Switzerland; yes of course it could have been done to follow through with his Masterplan, but I also believe he just wanted to stir the pot: we all know Stepan Trofimovič doesn't shy away from talking about Varvara Petrovna. Perhaps simply spilling tea??) I mean, poor Pyotr was left all alone at such a young age, of course he craves attention 🥺/s
Anyway yes, I love this character with all my heart, please Tumblr help me find my people, I need more conversations about this
The first thing that I absolutely love with all my heart is how utterly pathetic is Stepan Trofimovič:
His and Varvara Petrovna's relationship is something that never tired me during my reading (yes I'm a strong shipper of them, the whole wedding plot alone is enough to write a huge fanfic full of angst between them and maybe even something more about them during their youth, since we're given some guidelines about their relationship during their youth as well).
Now, for the big part (this is going to be mindless yapping and nothing more, it's IN NO WAY SHAPE OR FORM A PROPER CRITIQUE)
Verchovenskij's obsession with Šatov and Stavrogin keeps me awake at night: the whole monologue about Pëtr being nothing without Stavrogin in his little revolution can be read either as the most convoluted love confession, a proper invite (still convoluted) and it somehow shows how much of a spineless coward Pëtr actually is: he could never be the face/symbol of his own thing, he needs Stavrogin like he needs air to live.
What I mean is: Verchovenskij is both a manipulative genius and a pathetic wet kitten with a toxic crush, in dire need of validation because he was abandoned at such a young age🥺 /s
I just love this book and need more conversations about it, Tumblr please.
ALSO to add on Pyotr is a theatrical twink: this doesn't only work for the Bulgarian theatre version, it's pretty accurate (aside from the whole twink spiel, that can be up to debate (but not even that much)) BRO IS A DIVA, he needs to be the centre of attention, but at the same time strays from the spotlight, delegates people and have others do things for him. Need I remind you the whole mess he brought up mentioning the letters his father sent to him, when he was in Switzerland, complaining about his life in Russia? Yes, yes, of course it was done to stir the pot and for his diabolical plot, but he also just wanted to spill the tea and make things funny.

"You told me I am the best part of yourself. I'm telling you now: you are the worst part of myself, but a part of myself nonetheless, one that I am not complete without. I am sorry I couldn't have felt affection for you."
Nicolai Stavrogin
The excerpt was taken from the fanfic "AU Grand Jamais", aka the best demons fanfic I've ever read in my life. The writing is wonderful, the plot is amazing, everything in this fanfic is simply perfect and I NEED to share it with the whole world.
No kidding, I cried my eyes out in the middle of the night reading it, so that's a big recommendation.
Oh, and I made the edit totally inspired by the fanfic too lol
