In the grand history of library design, Baroque reading rooms stand out as a unique phenomenon. It was the first time in history that books were plentiful enough to line the walls of a room, but still not so affordable that it was common. Reading rooms became important symbolic reflections of wealth. It was also a consequence of the enlightenment, and the subsequent desire to reconcile the teachings of the church with new developments in science. The reading room, then, was not only a manifestation of wealth and power, but also ideological relevance in the dawn of a new age. This is often depicted in the sculpture and imagery of the baroque monastery reading rooms.

I hear that Austrian National Library is one of the most beautiful in the world, I couldn't agree more. STORIES FROM THE ROAD. Vienna Austria. This is the State Hall, a part of the National Library. When I walked in here I actually cried, yes I had tears in my eyes because it's such a fabulous place and makes me want to be a writer even more. We also made a point of coming here today because my husband and I met at a library many many years ago.
