It’s the kind of bar that women don’t usually come to on their own, at least not without a phaser on their hip. By midnight there’ll be a fistfight in the square, and woe betide the stranger who gets caught up in it. 

Violence begets violence, and it always has: the Cardassians invasion of Bajor led to the Demilitarised Zone, which led to the Maquis, which led to these damaged men in a shady bar who’ve forgotten how to communicate except with their fists. It’s an ancient story, but one Guinan would love not to hear told again. 

She slips inside. No one pays her much attention. It’s one of the gifts of El-Aurians, to be at least a little at home wherever they go. Cold comfort for a homeless species. The drinks being served are mostly Cardassian, presumably intercepted shipments. Guinan orders tawny kanar and hopes they haven’t watered it down. 

She sits at a quiet back table, her face hidden by the shadow of her hat, and waits.
