Toby woke up on a Wednesday and discovered he was famous on the internet.

He’d told the passenger not to take a picture of him, but somehow the guy had snuck one anyway, and now it was all over instagram - my cab driver looks like Tony Stark.

Bucky knew before the phone displayed Rhodey’s name and he almost didn’t pick up, not wanting to hear the words from the other man. Tony had missed the call before Peter’s bedtime. Just because he was a teenager now didn’t mean he didn’t still expect to say goodnight to both of his parents and Bucky had had a hell of a time getting him to sleep, convincing him that his dad was alright and that the timezones had thrown him off.But he knew.

As he listened to Rhodey, his mind wandered, recalling the relevant information for the will and his funeral wishes, running through a series of potential timelines. He thanked Rhodey, told him to watch out for himself and to come over whenever he needed, and told him goodbye.

For several minutes, he just stared at the black screen of the TV while he allowed his mind to wander away from the to-do lists and responsibilities he was suddenly left with. He allowed himself to think about Tony Stark: the man of iron, infamous turned famous prodigal son, recovery story extraordinaire and the man underneath all of that. The fidgety genius who feared feelings more than bullets and loved the people he loved with every inch of himself.

The number of years that he’d spent hiding his feelings suddenly felt like the biggest mistake he’d ever made, knowing that he could have had more time with Tony if he’d simply been honest. Instead, they’d barely had a year. A year of kisses and intentional cuddling. A year of casual touches and meaningful glances across the dinner table, of being a real and true family with their son. A year of I love you’s.

Later, when he had the capacity, he would be glad for the time, for the love, for the memory of his lips and the scrape of his goatee. He’d think back on the snarky jokes and rolling eyes and he’d remember trying not to smile in indulgence and the way his beautiful brown eyes told him everything he could ever need to know about what went on in that genius mind of his. The memories of a love he’d never thought he could have would carry him forward through the rest of his life.

But right now…right now he wanted to tear the heart from his chest and the flesh from his bones. He wanted to rip his hair out, scream as loud as he could, and break every goddamn thing in sight. If their son wasn’t sleeping in the next room, he might well have done some damage but he couldn’t. Peter needed to see how to handle grief, to stay sane in the face of immeasurable pain, control the emotions that would drown him otherwise. He had to set the example as well as he could.

     Slowly, he stood up. His bow was damaged, probably from the fall, though it could still be used; and his arrows were scattered around the floor. His sword was secured on his belt. Kíli quickly realised he was standing on a rock-hard material, but it wasn’t a rock. It was black, with white and yellow markings on it... artificial. The black floor extended for as long as he could see in front and around the buildings, and there were some metal artefacts on it -- oddly shaped like a giant metal bird. 

     A loud sound pierced the air, making the dwarf turn towards the white building. Out of one side, a huge amount of men and women came trotting towards him. They were carrying what Kíli imagined to be weapons, though they didn’t look like swords or axes. They were black, probably made of metal, though no sides were sharp enough to cut through armours, and they were held different too.
