STANDARDARCHITECTURE and Sun Hu’s team, the Rizhao Egret Bay Cherry Blossom Yard presents a landscape-sensitive architectural response to ecological degradation. Located on a scarred mountain slope in Rizhao, China, the project resists conventional development patterns, instead reworking the site’s raw materials, cliffs, loess, and exposed rock, into a new spatial language. A phased process of ecological restoration, defined as “cleaning, dressing, smoothing, healing,” guides the transformation from wounded terrain into a public space of renewal and reflection.
Local Qilu stone and concrete form a subdued material palette, anchoring the architecture within its context while emphasizing continuity with regional traditions. Cherry blossom groves, layered terraces, and sinuous pathways interweave architecture and topography, blurring the threshold between built and natural environments. The result is a civic landscape that foregrounds repair, memory, and rooted design as a strategy for meaningful place-making.
