INKTOBER 14 - Divine Dragon, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice
The battle against the Divine Dragon is one of my favorites in this video game, not because it is the least complicated battle in the game, but rather because it is beautifully spectacular before a fantastic being and adapting the mythology in the world of Sekiro.
I think From Software has achieved in SSDT, much more in its artistic and narrative section, between the earthly and the divine, especially with this boss.

I absolutely adore Dark Souls, and I think I always will--it's been my #1 favorite game for like seven years at this point--but playing Sekiro has made me notice the flaws that I wasn't seeing before. It's not about the difficulty per se, which is a critical aspect of this developer's work that I don't want to lose either. It's about quality-of-life fixes, and having consideration for meeting the player where they're at, so that all the hours it's going to take to "git gud" seems like a good use of their time in the first place.
A game designed to challenge your assumptions and be mechanically different from everything else on the market should have a training mode. Oh, no worries, Sekiro is still hard as fuck. You just don't get actively punished for practicing anymore.
A game where death is common and expected should have a relatively short cycle to get back to where you were and try again. Put checkpoints right before a tough boss, and an easy route back. This isn't about difficulty, it's about not using the game's content to punish the player by making them replay a boring run-back-to-the-boss over and over. Dark Souls is inconsistent about this, Sekiro is very consistent so far.
I'll always love Dark Souls and I wouldn't trade the 80 hours it took me on my first playthrough, buuuuut I think if I was gonna recommend it to someone absolutely brand new, I'd suggest they first get past the tutorial, then spend around an hour in the Undead Burg with a godmode mod on, just to practice combat essentials and parry mechanics. THEN wipe the save, get rid of the mod and start over.
