This idea actually seems very sad to me, and perhaps even sadder than it seems at first glance, and I will tell you why.

Otto is a mechanic. I think if Gibson is a real scientist (probably at least an experimental physicist and chemist), Otto will probably be an engineer.

Mechanics is the basis of physics. Anyone can't handle it and it's very important. Most fields of engineering and mechanics basically fulfill the dreams of physicists. It is the creations of engineers that fly in space and allow us, for example, the Internet. However, engineers are very underrated in a real world even when they are so important for us. You can see it in TBBT in Howard’s case where nobody cares about him because he doesn’t have a doctorate.

And I think we can agree that Otto's creations are essential.

Otto sometimes manages to build things before Gibson finishes talking about them - for exapmle there in ep. “Planetoid Q”:

Sometimes he seems to understand the theory logically. Maybe he doesn't just understand technical terms. I think the inability to recognize sarcasm or take everything too seriously may give the impression that it is a little slowed down. To me (as an autist) it looks like autism. However, don’t be fooled. - These people often discover their talents in exceptional fields. Just like our Otto.

(Note: I saw something, but I’m not sure if Otto being autistic is confirmed. I judge by my feelings.)

So don’t any of you ever dare to call him dumb or even “not the smartest” anymore!

It may be bold to say that he is as intelligent as Gibson. But I'm sure he's a lot smarter than Sparx.
