Flying Further, acrylic on canvas, 24” square, currently in a floating frame above my desk. Like many of my synthetic paper paintings, this is an abstract landscape. But it’s all smoothed out. I may have mentioned this before, but the inspiration for this style arrives from a late period Fairfield Porter painting, The Wall. My painting and drawing professor at art school 30 years ago really pushed Porter on us. I wonder how many listened? I wonder how many in my classes even still do art? Porter led me elsewhere, including Edwin Dickinson. And, through Porter’s art criticism, Mark Tobey. Tobey was likely more influential on my synthetic paper paintings. Back then, everything had to be looked up in books, or seen on a museum’s wall, so it wasn’t easy. You also didn’t know much in the way of personal details, unlike today when too many are obsessing on one’s “traits”, some for clickbait and others for power. I preferred those days when a little mystery was left behind. I think paintings should always have at least some “mystery” in them.
