I have a page for my worldbuilding projects that’s a huge WIP, but in the mean time, here’s a list of the ones I can remember off the top of my head! I’ve done my best to split these by genre, although some obviously fit in multiple categories. You can also browse through my "original stuff" tag for things that haven't made it as far as a concrete project, if you can tolerate the mess.
UPDATE: Tumblr changed their tag system, so I had to fix the links. They SHOULD be working, but chronological links don’t cooperate with mobile, so I’ve made them general links. Please add /chrono to the url if you can, a few of these are very weird out of order (looking at you, Boar’s Blood).

Ok but do the aliens find out that humans are actually the tiny things that clamber around the "bodies" or do they still think that those are symbiotic creatures that help with maintanence?
A few of them do during the plot of spycaller but I think they probably do manage to keep it secret from society as a whole!
I’m working on the first alien character for Spycaller, his name is Na’ahn and just like the premise itself, he is very hard to describe in short without sounding like a joke. He‘a basically a judge, but his species castrate their judges to kill loyalty instincts and also he’s sort of a dinosaur.
In addition to Na’ahn, the Hermes has another ally, and perhaps a more reliable one, in Investigator Sona, one of their colleagues and regularly their partner on cases. A three headed snake creature the size of a train, Sona had a scandal a few years back where they were involved romantically with a matriarch from Na’ahn’s species, and is particularly open minded about cross-species friendships and relationships in general. While the Hermes crew is wary of them because Sona isn’t a top investigator for nothing, Sona comfortably thinks of Hermes as a work friend.
so if kids usually stay home, why was the kid on the murdered mech onboard?
it isn’t uncommon for older kids to tag along on shorter trips, and the child involved in the story is 8, so she’s definitely old enough for metaphorical take your kid to work day! more specifics will come up as i lay out the plot but it isn’t TOO bizarre for her to be there as she’s old enough to be trusted to behave

I just have one big question, Was becoming a judge voluntary for Na'ahn? Like was it a choice?
Cause if it wasn't that just doesnt sit right w/ me and I will fight somebody lmao
I’m going to go with “you should probably be uncomfortable with how this is handled” for the judges. I try not to build my alien cultures too idealized, so the process has some nasty moral implications but is so normalized that most people don’t question it. There are definitely activists who push back against it, though!
The sensitive period to become male is fairly young, around what would be a ten year old child were they human, with a few kids from each family being chosen for the change. About 9 in 10 are volunteers, usually kids who are eager for adventure or who don’t have a close bond with their siblings and want to try elsewhere. Their fathers take them out and care for them for a couple months while the separation from their matriarch triggers the change, it’s a physically uncomfortable but overall positive experience for most of the kids. The loyalty breaks but there’s still fondness for their families and the ones who don’t become judges are raised to adulthood before leaving home again.
At the end of the process is the judge selection, where all the boys from that year’s group are gathered up by the government. There’s a standard number of judges and they only take more boys when they’ve had deaths among the judges in the past year. They do some various personality and critical thinking tests, then separate out the kids who do best and ask for volunteers from that group. If they get enough, they move forward. If they DON’T, they take the kids from the top of the class whether they like it or not.
There’s also the fact that kids that young often don’t fully understand what’s going to happen to their brains if they do this. They’ve had their intense loyalty to their matriarch (who is usually their mother) severed and are still sorting out their new feelings when they’re offered ANOTHER serious change to brain chemistry. Their fathers do their best and most of them knew basically what they were getting into becoming male, but for obvious reasons none of them have a father who was sterilized as a child.
Na’ahn volunteered for the change because he wanted to meet new people, and then again to be a judge because he was top of his class and felt like that meant he SHOULD do it. He did not fully understand what he was doing to himself, and while he isn’t an unhappy person, he probably wouldn’t have done it if he had.
In skycaller, have any other animals from earth escaped extinction besides humans?
Initially there were some dogs and cats, but they’ve died out by now! Pet keeping continues, however— there’s a pest species with an ecological niche similar to city rats that are weird 3-foot-long feathery quadrupeds, and they’re so immensely social that ones taken in infancy bond easily to humans. They aren’t domesticated but they’re easy enough to tame and they’re very soft and warm and playful, so kids in particular just love the little guys.
I’ve tagged some posts about it, but the mech story’s working title is Spycaller! The goal is to do a murder mystery all caught up in political intrigue and the intricacies of the bizarre intergalactic community. I do a lot of romances in my work but this one mostly focuses on working relationships and the way human families are structured.
